During a 2006 narcotics raid, three white Atlanta cops busted into the home of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston, who was black. She was killed in the course of the raid, which turned out to have been based on an illegally-acquired warrant. The incident blew the lid off of some corrupt goings-on in the Atlanta police department and, of course, caused some serious racial tension. Now, Arthur Bruce Tesler, the only cop to stand trial in the case (the other two pleaded guilty to manslaughter), is awaiting a verdict. There's only one problem — the jury of ten whites and two blacks is hopelessly deadlocked. If he walks, I'm pretty sure Al Sharpton is going to try to shut down ATL. [AJC]
Jesus, that breaks my heart. What an awful story. As usual, Lauren, you're one of the few places on the web to bring attention to these kinds of stories. Kudos.
Don't be too sure, she is a Black woman and Al Sharpton tends to only acknowledge crimes against Black men humanity.
Good point, Black Ivy. I knew there was something about this story that would render it uninteresting to Al Sharpton, and you hit it.
I feel empathy for the family of this lady as she reminds me of my grandma.
I remember reading that she shot first and hit three of the officers including one in the face. I also read that she was afraid of the young boys in the neighborhood. To bad she didn't get some of those street cornor pharmarcists instead of the cops.
Not trying to be funny, but how is it that a woman this old shoots better than the 20 year idiots waging war/ethnic cleansing/genocide in the inner city streets of America.
Thanks lauren for this update as I wondered what happend with this story, and BIG you ain't never lied.
