Mayor Mell Kuhn of Arkansas City, KS, is right. What on earth is wrong with dressing up in black face as a character named Smellishus Poon — with back-up dancers called the Red Hot Puntangs — to raise funds for a children's organization? I mean, people seriously need to lighten up. It wasn't even real blackface, because Kuhn admitted he is no good at putting on a "black accent."
After the totally unexpected outcry denouncing his performance, Kuhn said, "All this PC is bullshit. We go around walking on eggshells all the time, we don’t get anything done." Unfortunately for Kuhn, the local NAACP and other organizations weren't really taking that statement of defense as a good answer. He ended up being forced to apologize. If only people weren't so sensitive! [TP]
First it was Angelina Jolie in 'Blackface' then Robert Downey, Jr., now this. If you give people an inch they will take a mile, every time.
All the NAACP wants is for him to apologize? The mayor needs to resign (and move to Alabama where he will fit in).
I usually trust you, Lauren, but I had to check if this was an Onion story when I saw the mayor's REAL name is Kuhn, likely pronounced "coon". Unbelievable.
let's put on whiteface, call ourselves Honky, Cracker and White Trash, and beat the shit out of our wives and have sex with our little children and wear wife-beaters and wear a KKK hood!
fucking scumbags
@ Monie: Robert Downey's character in Tropic thunder was NOT a blackface archetype. See the movie for yourself first before you make a false statement.
WTF? whenever i hear someone complain about people being too PC, it's usually because he or she is being called out on being racist, sexist or generally distasteful and grossly offensive. shame on major kuhn.
"We go around walking on eggshells all the time, we don’t get anything done."
What exactly was he trying to get done with his routine? He needs more people.
:sigh: a black accent? Smellishus Poon? eggshells?
@Monie
When was Jolie? Seriously out of curiosity
@Bklyn DreamZ
In the film depiction of A Mighty Heart, Mariane Pearl's (wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl) memoir. Pearl is a black woman. Jolie is obviously not.
Ah yes! Slipped my memory. Thanks!
Look, I'm all for pushing the envelope of good taste in creative and subversive ways, which is why I found Robert Downey, Jr., extremely hilarious in "Tropic Thunder".
But Smellishus Poon? Seriously, what the fuck? I really wish the term "PC" would be eradicated from the American lexicon, as it only seems to be invoked by people who are frustrated that most people don't like to see and hear them act like ignorant assholes.
@ Monie
Thanks, but no, we don't want him here in Alabama.
So according to Kuhn, it's everyone else's fault they were offended.
In fairness to Jolie (who incidentally was Marianne Pearl's own choice to play her),
Pearl is mixed race, and I do know a few people who always assumed that Jolie was too, at least until saying it out loud and having everyone looking at them like they were deranged.
@ shuggles:
Marianne Pearl was NOT black. She was mixed, Jewish, Black and something else (can't remember). she personally wanted Jolie to play the role.
I mean i swore up and down this was not a real story at first… I was thinking:" since when did stereohyped get all funny on us." But sadly enough.. it's true.
Although I do find it offensive, honestly.. im going to sleep ok tonight regardless.
refusing to apologise is simply a bit indignant though….
he needs to get some black friends, because he obviously did not check the "White Man's guide to Black sh*t"
Vote this man out! Never underestimate the power of one vote!
I cannot say I am surprised that people are offended. I still don't get it though. Didn't your parents ever teach you to say so, about things that don't affect or apply to you. "Deaf Feminist Punk" insinuated that all white people:
"beat the shit out of our wives and have sex with our little children and wear wife-beaters and wear a KKK hood!"
None of that applies to me, but to deny that it applies to anybody would be silly. It doesn't apply to me to "SO" say it all you want. I don't see people (except Muslims extremists)getting upset when stand-up comics poke fun at them.
i agree with 1wing and i'm a black female. sometimes i think blacks let too much get to them. sometimes some stuff can simply be ignored. Obviously, this guy didnt even think about what he was doing, and so what. It doesnt affect my life…He is who he is and just because someone "MAKES" him apologize, doesnt mean crap in my book. He still is going to be the same person on the inside.
I don't know, I'm white and I thought this Poon thing was pretty over the top.
This shit is wild.
How do the transvestites feel about his terrible impression of a drag queen?
And seriously- there is so much else about this that is questionable (besides that he's an ELECTED OFFICAL!), I could barely see the racism behind all the horrible, Pink Flamingos-style tastelessness here. "Red Hot Poontangs???" What the hell kind of "children's organization" accepted this money? This whole thing is knee-deep in W-T-F…
If it was for comedy and to help a children's organization why not just wear the costume and do the routine. Why did it have to be in Blackface? because that's where the problem comes in and that's how blacks know it was meant to be racial.
