Kelly Rowland Is Chocolate And Proud
But Not Until Recently

Kelly Rowland, now that she's out of Destiny's Child and no longer gets last choice in weave and wardrobe, has really come into her own, appearance-wise. That's why it's sad to know that she spent her earlier years wishing she was fair-skinned just like, and I'm only guessing here, her best friend, Beyonce.

KELLY Rowland once wanted to look white. "It's said that brown-skinned girls don't sell magazines and that's so sad," the sexy songbird tells next month's Essence. "I remember wishing I was more fair-skinned, but Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom, would say, 'Don't you know how beautiful you are?' She made me come into my brown beauty. I didn't get it, but now I do. I am chocolate and beautiful and loving it."

Sure, Tina Knowles told her she was beautiful, but I don't believe living in the Knowles household and playing second fiddle to Beyonce her whole life helped that color complex one bit. It's great she's snapped out of it now. But she needs to remember that even beautiful girls need to stay hydrated.

Why does Bey seem to get lighter and lighter everyday then? And explain matching nose jobs and possibly lip reduction?

The girl can brown nose the Knowles in every interview she does.

Sunscreen and staying out of the sun will keep you light and keep the wrinkles away. It will not make you lighter. If you use skin care products with lightening agents, your skin may lighten over the long haul.

I've seen B look all shades of brown from very light to darker mocha in photo shoots so keep in mind that lighting and makeup play a big key in what you see on the page and screen.

B has had a nose job for sure, but I can't comment on anything Kelly has done.

…but seriously I don't think B is getting lighter everyday though. Album covers, mag covers, live, etc. I don't see a major skin color shift.

Wow, I can't imagine wanting to be a light-skinned blow-up doll my entire life (ie, Beyonce).

Kelly definitely got a nose job too. Google "kelly rowland nose job."

Other than during my most awkward years, I've never wanted to be lighter. I've wanted my mom's nose, less nappy (not kinky. NAPPY) hair, longer lashes, clearer skin an thinner legs, but I like my skin color. I actually which I were darker because then my little cuts, bruises and scars would be less noticeable. I love Gabrielle Union's color. That to me is ideal.

I never had skin color issues like my father had. My mother is very dark and my father very light. I can honestly say that I have never wanted to be my mother's dark chocolate color, but I've never wished to be my father's cafe au lait color either. I guess I have never wanted to be anything other than what I was given. I love being a cappuccino color. I don't want to be darker, and I use sunscreen on my face and body everyday. I ain't trying to be white or get lighter. I am trying to be the same color bmd at 85 that I am now. That's all. Which is why I stan for Beyonce when ppl say things about her skin. Who wants to get darker when they don't have to be?? Ok..white folks do, but you know what I am saying.

bmd, I have several friends who go tanning and not all of them are light. All I'm saying is that Beyonce looks lighter than she did at beginning of Destiny's Child. Unless there's a constantly bright light on her, doesn't make sense to me.

I use sun block too for the skin cancer protection and I would tan if it weren't for that. I did tan when I was younger. After one bad burn, I kept my a– inside and bought some sun screen. I'm still trying to see if they can spray tan me, but so far, no luck.

Don't get me wrong, I know that some black folks want to look darker. And you're in luck. Ever pass though SF, and I'll spray tan you for free. That's one of the services I offer, but I digress. Ha. That was a segue to the fact that I have tanned some very light skinned black ppl so I know that some of us do want to be darker.

Maybe Bey Bey uses Ambi?? Haha. She probably has facial treatments with skin "brighteners" (read whiteners) in then. You can get special facials and such the will "brighten" your skin. I use certain products on some of my white clients who are very pale and want to stay that way that have "brighteners" in them. If you use them over time, and then use hella light reflecting makeup, you would look lighter, but the key is to just stay out of the sun. Now…when she's on the beach with Jay or by the pool in Miami, she ain't looking so light skinned.

Daria - find a good MUA to spray tan you. They'll come to your house and do it right in your own shower. It's personal and customizable, "take this color up, take this color down. Shade this, shadow that." That way you have a rapport with the person, and you're not just another number. And, you're helping out an artist!
