Lewis Hamilton Met With Blackface and Jeers Instead of Cheers

A group of tolerance-challenged sports fans in Spain are giving British Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton the same treatment they give their black soccer players. That is, they’re being totally racist.

The McLaren driver, 23, was subjected to racist comments and was faced with a group of spectators wearing wigs, dark make-up and t-shirts with the slogan “Hamilton’s Family” on the front during pre-season testing near Barcelona. And although the Briton insisted he still loves being in Spain, he admitted he was not prepared for what occured at the Circuit de Catalunya, in Montmelo.

“The truth is that I feel somewhat sad, I am in love with this country, and especially the city of Barcelona and this circuit, which is one of my three favourites,” Hamilton said.

He hasn’t really made it until someone throws a banana at him. [TOL]

I know. Looking at them, you’d almost think they didn’t know they were being offensive.

For what they lack in tolerance, they make up for it with Javier Bardem.

I’m curious as to why this obvious display of racism is tolerate in Europe? I guess I’ve gotten so used to American racism, institutionalized and covert, save for the occasional “that fella sure is black!” kind of comment.

It definitely depends on where you are just like in the US. I’ve been to some places like San Francisco where everyone is “color blind” ::rolling eyes:: but then there are places were blatant racism is totally acceptable.

Even the most “liberal” cities struggle with racism. I lived in Austin (Texas, ya’ll!) for years, and the African-American community was accepted on the surface, but marginalized in the community.

Then there are some small towns in Texas, where there are unspoken rules of racism, an order to life there.

Please, these folks in Spain are probably just haters. Haters in the respect that they absolutely hate the fact that he’s black AND he’s ass rich. A rich, black man is an oxymoron in many parts of the world.

Having traveled some in Europe, I have to say that Spaniards are particularly racist. We were told at one point, “I know what you like to be called: niggers!” in one shop.
Perhaps it’s because the only black people they see are on television, and in particularly offensive rap videos, but I stay way from Spain. It’s not a fun place.
