When her husband didn't seem to have a chance in hell of getting into the White House, Michelle Obama was considered a smart, accomplished woman with a fun, sarcastic sense of humor and a self-deprecating air. But then her man started winning, and she became "unpatriotic" for saying that she was finally proud of her country as a result of Barack's success. She was divisive because she wrote a paper about how Princeton University wasn't a friendly atmosphere for blacks in the early 80s (blasphemy!). Then, based on a completely imaginary video that everyone knew was imaginary, she became the dreaded ABW. Angry black woman. And I'm not even getting into the terrorist fist jab.
Michelle did nothing to deserve an anti-white or angry reputation, and yet she is seen as anti-white and angry. Meanwhile, Cindy McCain manages to drop the fact that she is "very patriotic" in every interview she does, and while outright lies against Michelle Obama are fair game, Cindy McCain's very real scandal involving prescription drug addiction and stealing from a charity are seen as off limits. What if Michelle Obama had that same back story? It's unimaginable.
To quote syndicated columnist Ruben Navarette, "Here you have an accomplished, intelligent and outspoken black woman, and many Americans are at a loss about how to handle that combination. They'd rather try to destroy her than have to deal with her."
After the jump, check out photographic evidence of how angry Michelle Obama really is.
ABW sterotype largly came from the reality TV. Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama are two sides of the same coin. Some people just can't stand a strong powerful woman, and when she is built like a supermodel(Michelle), some women really hate.
What if Michelle Obama had that same back story? It’s unimaginable.
Exactly. I'm glad he said this. I'm TIRED of the blatant double-standard.
Chic Noir, my dear - ABW stereotype has been around a long time, yet gathered a lot of steam starting in the late 60's, early 70's when the nuclear family began to really break down. as people began many different types of civil rights movements around the same time, the m&ms (mainstream majority) REALLY kicked up the stereotypical propaganda. reality tv is just the m&ms way of perpetuating that stereotype. what you see on tv is either what m&ms want people to be seen as, or what m&ms think people are like.
di-my-e- The monihayn(tp) report, yes I am well aware of it. The safire(tp) stertoype has also been around since slavery. Reality TV gave a face to the sterotypes via I love New York, Omarosa(not that bad), Survivor etc…
"Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama are two sides of the same coin."
Thank goodness someone else notices. I tried to tell my staunchly anti-Hillary father this, and he's evidently developed amnesia of the Clinton era when many right-wingers were tearing into her for being untraditionally outspoken, ambitious and strong. The Hillary folks couldn't even see the utter irony of lambasting MO for being cut from the same cloth… WTF? That photo above owns, BTW.
It's amazing how utterly terrified some people are of Michelle Obama, and what she represents. A strong, intelligent black woman in the White House is a nightmare scenario to Fox, and their viewers.
They are doing the exact same thing to her, they tried with Hillary. The results will be similar.
The whole country pride thing was a rookie mistake because… she's a rookie. She gave them and sound byte that they can now use against her every chance they get. We the audience must decide whether or not to watch and how to react to this f-ery.
I don't think Princeton profs considered her "divisive." That's probably Fox's interpretation. Princeton is VERY old school. The resistance to admitting women was a HUGE issue. They felt that women should graduate from sister schools because goodness forbid one have a wife who is inarguably an intellectual equal. Maybe this is from novels, but I do remember that Princeton and Jews didn't do so hot. Sun Also Rises?
My parents are totally bugged out by Michelle Obama, and I wonder how many white, suburban Democrats in their 50s feel the same way. I can tell they've been drinking the Fox Noise Kool-Aid, because whenever Obama gets mentioned, they instantly jump on his "unpatriotic", "angry" wife. "She's got that whole, ya know, Black Panther power thing going on! Don't you see it?" I have never gotten that vibe from Michelle Obama, and from my parents' words this has a lot more to do with their perceptions than with the woman they're talking about. Obama's wife is a tough lady who has definitely got her act together (and has probably spent a lot of time keeping her husband's act together, too). Looks like I need to start mixing up a new batch of Kool-Aid when I get home.
"But then her man started winning, and she became “unpatriotic” for saying that she was finally proud of her country as a result of Barack’s success."
Actually what Michelle said was that for the first time in her life, she was REALLY proud of her country, not FINALLY. So her allegedly unpatriotic statement is propaganda created by the right. Her statement was definitely taken out of context.
Leave Michelle Alone!!!!!! This is showing people for who they really are. Those neighbours, colleagues, associates, professors…this is how they really think about us but it doesn't come out until they feel threatened. The ones who don't say these things and fall for these tactics are the ones who should really be your friends.
DivergentDana & solitaire, I am glad that you noticed the simlarity between the two. For some reason Americans don't seem to like a strong first lady.
I just love the fact that she felt good enough about herself and her Barack to step between women and the white house. And, when she criticized Hillary "for not running her own house" I was just all atither with feminist admiration. Then, "I'm just glad picking the vice president has NOTHING to do with me." Followed by the immortal, "I just like to be thought of as pretty." And, who can forget "I say by to them in the morning and tuck them in at night and they don't even know I've been gone" I wish I could work my kids down to two brief pecks a day, think of all the work I would catch up on. One day your daughters will ask how you helped women in to the white house. And, you can tell them all about how you would rather be led. Thanks, way to stand together. (The rest of America)
