Mike Huckabee was on Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough this morning, and had some surprising (for his ilk) things to say about Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama’s speech yesterday.
And one other thing I think we’ve gotta remember. As easy as it is for those of us who are white, to look back and say “That’s a terrible statement!”…I grew up in a very segregated south. And I think that you have to cut some slack — and I’m gonna be probably the only Conservative in America who’s gonna say something like this, but I’m just tellin’ you — we’ve gotta cut some slack to people who grew up being called names, being told “you have to sit in the balcony when you go to the movie. You have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant. And you can’t sit out there with everyone else. There’s a separate waiting room in the doctor’s office. Here’s where you sit on the bus…” And you know what? Sometimes people do have a chip on their shoulder and resentment. And you have to just say, I probably would too. I probably would too. In fact, I may have had more of a chip on my shoulder had it been me.
But should blacks have a chip on their shoulder when their state is still waving the Confederate flag? Maybe Mike can get back to me on that one. Huckabee also said that politicians shouldn’t be held responsible for everything people around them say and that pastors (he’s one, remember) often get carried away during sermons and say things they don’t necessarily mean. He obviously has a political motive to make those two statements, especially if John McCain is looking to him to fill that V.P. spot. I don’t, however, see a political reason for him to talk about cutting black people some slack, something I don’t ever recall a Repub saying. Must be that Christian understanding.
It doesn’t extend to gays, in case you were wondering.

Color me surprised! Wow!
I’m not too surprised. I remember reading that Mike Huckabee got a significant portion of the black vote when he ran for governor - more than most white Republicans get.
Yeah — I have the same color, too. “Surprised”
And I know that’s not the answer Joe Scarborough was seeking from Huckabee.
I wonder how long we’re going to have to hear about Wright. Let’s move on, America (and by “America” I mean “cable news shows desperately trying to fill time”).
I too, was very surprised listening to the Huck. McCain also took the “High” road on this but we all know with Hagee and Parsley hanging over his head what else could he do????????
Well, he could do like the pundits and point out that he wasn’t a member of their churches for 20 yrs but he didn’t. As a matter of fact, does anyone really ever hear McSame mention God/church?
I’m not surprised at all. Despite some of his arcane beliefs, he’s a decent guy.
i wasn’t surprised, either. part of the reason i was singing Huckabee’s praises a few months ago is because he appears a straight shooter. sure he says things to get him elected, but not at the expense of saying what he doesn’t believe.
Huckabee isn’t anywhere near as conservative as he’s tried to paint himself as during this election.
People the time has come in this land….
when the LION….
must lay dowwnnnn with the lamb.
Hey thats alright Huck! I personally liked Mitt Romney myself, I never paid much attention to Huckabee. That realistic idea and persspective, he should make a big speech about it so more whites can hear this……… really
wow, I have to say I am very surprised a present day ‘Conservative’ will make statement like these. You know what, we have been saying this all along, people just don’t understand why Black people are mad. He seems to get it, or at least he is trying to seem that way. I wish more people cna learn to look at other’s point of view as he just did.
