• Since Amy Winehouse was too busy being a crackhead, Alicia Keys has been given the task of creating the theme song for the next James Bond movie with Jack White. [EUR]
• The mainstream media might be avoiding the subject, but the National Enquirer is hell bent on bringing down John Edwards with this love child/mistress scandal. [MG]
• For undisclosed reasons, Ciara's debut film, an adaptation of the play, Mama I Want To Sing, is going straight to video. Here's a reason: it was probably really, really, really bad. [BS]
• A senior reporter for Univision is suing the network; she says that anchors with lighter complexions are taking her place. [TMZ]
On the last entry about the reporter from Univision suing because lighter-skinned anchors are taking her place, I know it's probably not to far from the truth. I just came back from the UNITY Journalism Conference where I realized that most of the top anchors on the news networks are all light-skinned. Soledad O'Brien, Suzanne Malveux, Fredericka (whatever her last name is), TJ from the Weekend Edition, and the list could go one. So if I could witness that as an African-American woman and feel slighted, I know it must be madness for a Latina.
@ Loudmouth Protestant: Ugh.
It's like that with Bollywood, too. There's a preference for lighter skinned Indians over darker skinned Indians.
IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No offense to Ms. Keys, and the greatness of Jack White. A Ronson/Winehouse production would have been much better.
Interesting to see what the two can up with though. But I don't think she has the star power to carry the lead song for such a big film
I'm not all that surprised that "Mama I Want to Sing" is going straight to dvd. And I wouldn't neccessarily blame it on Ciara's acting abilities or lack there of. More than likely it would do better in sales from videos than box office sales. There's not much of a culture with the black community supporting the likes of movies like this, although I would have paid to see it. Sure Tyler's movies are making big dollars, but I'm positive this movie would not have received that much financial backing for promotion.
Yay for Alicia!!!! That thing about John Edwards would have been really embarrassing if he was the actual nominee! Could you imagine if he was! Thank goodness they haven't found anything like that about Obama!
Hell, I've never seen an anchor on univision who didn't look Northern European. I'm surprised they had her on there to begin with. And yeah, all the black major anchors are multiracial though I really applaud Soledad for her eagerness to take on projects related to Blacks and Latinos because I'm sure those are tar babies (pun intended) that few are willing to take on so they don't get pigeon holed.
Suzanne and Soledad both graduated from Harvard, started their career in notoriously light skinned focused 80s and worked their butts off when given the Token Black Chick spot. They've earned every bit of success they have. It's just unfortunate that their darker skinned counterparts weren't given much of a chance during that era. Sade Baderinwa, though she's been deserving for eons now, is just getting a bit of the love she deserves. Deborah Roberts isn't getting that much. Robin Roberts has been given the opportunities to do what they probably figured were fluff stories but she's done them amazingly well. People paid attention. Gwyn Ifyll isn't getting what she deserves.
