  • Chicago's Color Purple hasn't achieved the same success as Broadway's. You think it's karma for making R. Kelly an honored guest on opening night? [CT]
  • I doubt Bush has let this federal official join his elite boys' club. [BAR]
  • It shouldn't be surprising that mainstream media did not notice the issues surrounding black hair until Don Imus called somebody nappy-headed. Now black hair stories are all over the major papers. [CT]
  • To diffuse the controversy over his n-word "slip up," the former chairman of Roger Williams University wants his name removed from the university's law school. How noble! [MSNBC]

Something about the article about black hair rubbed me the wrong way.
    This is my favorite quote…

"Most whites are oblivious to the cultural minefield young black girls are born into, just by virtue of having hair that doesn't bounce and behave."

That's strange b/c my hair bounces (thanks to routine touch-ups) and I have thick ass hair. While a lot of other races are oblivious to black hair, I doubt if it "epitomizes the deep disconnect between white society and black society."

In a way it does though. My BF has no idea the pain I am going through to find someone here in the wack-ass bay area who can do a decent press and flat-iron b/c I don't put relaxers on my hair. He thinks I have good hair compared to the other black women he's dated, and should just wash and wear it natural (psych!). He doesn't understand why I have to wrap it at night, etc. The disconnect of "hair understanding" is huge btwn blacks and whites and it flows into other areas. I tend to agree with the author b/c most whites are oblivious to all the stuff we have to go through. Until I moved in with my BF he really didn't see the day-to-day upkeep that goes into a black woman's hair. He said once while I was bitching about having forgotten my scarf at a hotel and having to sleep without wrapping my hair, "wow, I really don't envy black women."
