"Do white people lie — to pollsters or even to themselves — about their willingness to vote for black candidates? In the not-so-distant past, the consensus was a clear yes. Today, however, there is widespread disagreement about whether Obama is subject to the predicament known as the Wilder or Bradley Effect — whether in the privacy of the voting booth, white people will actually pull the lever for the first black man to come within shouting distance of the presidency. In 1989, Wilder polled as many as 15 points ahead in the days before the election for Virginia governor, but squeaked into office by a minuscule 6,700 votes. … The reason for these disparities? A significant amount of white people did not admit that race played a role in their voting decision, pollsters and academics say. Another factor: When the person asking the questions was black, respondents were more likely to say they favored the black candidate. In the recent Democratic primary, exit polls in 28 states overstated Obama's actual share of the final vote."
do white people lie? is water wet?
I think that this is similar to the "I have a black best friend" thing that white people use. In these somewhat progressive times it’s not cool to be seen as insensitive, un-worldly or even down right racist. So some tell a little white lie to save face.
We do the same thing, I know you can't stand one of your white co-workers, but when asked you say "he's cool," cause you don't want to be accused of being an angry black…
@ FRI you silly
@ Slick - not all of us do. if i don't like someone i will proudly state that i do not.
also why tell a "little white lie"? why does anyone accept that bullshit? so many people do not want to be honest about their feelings toward race. if you are racist or biased or prejudiced or believe stereotypes or whatevs, be honest. at least if people admit that there is an issue, we can attempt to educate people to the truth. as long as we have all these "kinda, sorta racists" that are okay with people at work or school, but will never have a certain type of person in their real personal life, we will have a problem. this works with all isms and phobias. we have to start at the beginning, the only way to do that is to be real about it.
I think when it comes down to it, a lot of voters who claim to be supporters might simply not vote for Barack,
I think it is an issue of reverse-racism, the fear of being called a racisim unconsciously makes them more overly supportive and overly interested in black..but it is an issue with there image in society but once alone in a voters booth with no one else present, their real political views will make their actions
