With the March 29 election that could unseat him quickly approaching, Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe is taking the crazy in his country up to 11 while he still can. It was announced yesterday that Mugabe, politician in name but dictator in action, had signed into law a mandate that foreign and white-owned businesses must surrender a majority of their operations to black citizens. Neat!
Unless the Minister of State for Indigenisation and Empowerment alters the share allotment, the law would mean that several banks, mining companies and phone companies — among other foreign businesses — will have to relinquish control.
In case you don't know, this law is similar to one Hitler enacted on Jewish businesses in Germany. It's also somewhat of a progressive step for Mugabe, who used to simply slaughter whites who were richer than him. With a national history like that, it's no wonder the Police Commissioner of Zimbabwe publicly announced he wouldn't hesitate to gun down anyone perpetrating violence come election day later this month.
Currently, Zimbabwe is said to suffer from an awe-inspiring 24,000 percent inflation – which economists say is a low estimate – and an unemployment rate hovering around 80 percent.

The richest continent on the plaent in terms of resources is Africa, yet those resources/land the resources live on are not primarily owned by native Africans.
I respect the fact that he wants Zimbabwe citizens to regain control of their own resources, but Zimbabwe can petition the UN to enact sanctions on foreign companies/nations that benefit from Zimbabwe, organzined non-violent movements/public relations campaign for Ziombabwe's economic independence could help better than violence.
Or maybe I'm just a peace-loving hippie.
I think it should always be mentioned that whites owned virtually all of the arable in Zimbabwe. Mugabe asked those white farmers to voluntarily relinquish the majority of those lands for a semi-reasonable price. They, instead, got the rest of the white world behind them, and they have effectively quarantined Zimbabwe. Mugabe isn't as crazy as he is so often depicted. It is crazier that whites wish to continue plundering the continent's resources.
pretty much all natural resource based economies are f-ed up. the people generally get screwed because the government doesn't need them. corrupt leaders. no jobs. no infrastructure. very disgustingly rich leaders.
…and I would be applauding this move if he actually instituted effective policies. That would require luring back the people of the Brain Drain.
Seriously though, if it were South Africa, I'd be doing a happy dance. I have nothing against all white people. I have everything against colonists and their spawn who hogged up land that wasn't theirs to take up, celebrating their wealth as the "indigenous" 99% of the population suffers. .
White Zimbabweans were 1% of the population, yet owned 90% of the land. That's ridiculous. So in order to restore some sense of equity, you need extreme measures. How is this any different from how Whites treated Native Americans? Okay for them, but wrong for us? Give me a break!
Either the government buys up the majority and makes it a fascist state, (goverment owned corporations), or the white Zimbabweans who own 90% of everything sell off to other privite equity holders and still you have disparity.
I'm no economics major, but unless the UN or some international union helps out, it's trouble all around.
PS: To all the European nations who have screwed Africa for more than 600 years, you better help out sort this mess to benefit the native population.
long overdue, imho. Now when is Kenya going to catch on, because the same situation prevails and is probably even worse because of the economic dominance by white immigrants, indians and other asian business people and rich folk from Israel and the middle east.
Mugabe is a monster in many ways, but I have no sympathy for any whites in Africa.
