Much like the servant Grusha in the famous allegory The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Morgan Tsvangirai, Robert Mugabe's main opponent in Zimbabwe's presidential race, has dropped out of the runoff election rather than tear his beloved nation apart.
In the weeks after his slim March 29 loss to Tsvanigirai, Mugabe sanctioned mobs that stormed the nation's countryside, driving farmers from their lands and slaughtering anyone who dared stand in their way. Though the consequences of the violence proved dire – Zimbabwe's inflation is the highest in the world and food shortages leave citizens starving – it nonetheless achieved its desired effect: many opposition voters were swayed into "supporting" Mugabe. Yesterday, Tsvangirai said he won't participate in an election so obviously tainted with blood.
Mugabe continues to assert that "colonial powers" are to blame for the violence.
Lauren thank you for continuing to post about Zimbabwe even when the posts don't garner a lot of comments. I think Mugabe shares an equal amount of blame with Great Britian.
Ah Mugabe, you nut. I'm sure this has been thought up elsewhere, but I wonder if this whole election wasn't rigged, since Tsvangirai used to be part of Mugabe's cabinet? So Tsvangirai runs as an opposition to Mugabe's rule just to appease the rest of the world and discontent Zimbabweans even if nothing was ever to come of it?
I've consciously tried to avoid this story.
Note to Mugabe: can't take it with you and you're what? 80ish? And all that evil can't possibly good for the cardiovascular system.
Chic Noir, this is Cord's post. I'm sure he appreciates your appreciation. Bylines will be back soon!
Very effing sad.
Robert Mugabe is a real piece of work. During a press conference today, after Tsvangirai had already gone to the Dutch, Mugabe insisted Tsvangirai was in no danger, "Tsvangirai is frightened. He has run to seek refuge at the Dutch embassy. What for? These are voters, they will do you no harm. Political harm, yes, because they will vote against you. No one wants to kill Tsvangirai." This man has certainly mastered the art of bullshit. Or maybe he truly is delusional. Either way, he's wild.
