NAACP Again Going After Rebel Flag

andreconfed

NAACP leaders meeting in Cincinnati say they're going to ramp up their campaign against flying the Confederate flag in South Carolina. In 2000, a compromise between state parties for and against the flag in saw it removed from the Capitol dome and instead flown on the Statehouse grounds near the Confederate Soldier Monument.

The fact that everyone in the country isn't against the flying of a symbol that was once devoted to the decimation of the United States has always confused me. Not being from the region, I don't really understand the bond some Southerners – like Georgian Andre 3000 there – feel with the flag. Is there anyone out there who thinks the banner is a symbol of heritage – not hate – and wants to explain their beliefs?

I'm from Missouri and I always associate the Confederate flag with white trash redneck assholes who love beating their gfs/wives, hating black people, voted for Bush and will vote for McCunt, watch lesbian porn but against gay marriage, and all that jazz.

Yeah, I'm against the flag. It IS a symbol of heritage– that is, white trash heritage that's filled with history of hatred, racism, bigotry and ignorance.

and it still thrives today in many parts of Missouri, or as I like to call it, MISERY.

Nope, unless by heritage you mean heritage of hate. But Andre 3000 is wearing a confederate flag belt buckle, one might say after reading this post! So? A hip hop star from Georgia known for his eccentric fashion statements wearing a bejeweled Confederate flag belt buckle is one thing. I've seen it worn by black people (and others) as a fashion statement before. But the truth is, average black southerners (hell, average southerners of any hue) are not walking around waving the Confederate flag or wearing it splashed on their clothes. And why is that? When you actually did grow up in the South and saw Confederate Flags adorning the mud flaps of dusty pick-up trucks decorated with bumper stickers that said things like, "If we had known they would be this much trouble, we would have picked our own damn cotton," it's quite easy to realize that "heritage not hate" is a lie. At the very least, it's not the whole story.

Sorry, all though I'm not in favor of the confederate flag, my first reaction was to sigh and shake my head, as in, 'there goes the NAACP chasing yet another symbolic fight again.'

the confederate flag is nothing but heritage anyone who thinks the confederate flag is racist needs one hell of a history lesson. which i am not going to give. but once you learn the true meaning of the confederate battle flag you will come to learn the the flag is not a racist flag. you don't have to agree with its meaning but everyone needs to understand the flag is not racist.

Being a 22 year old female from Florida I used to have the same feelings about the flag. Trust me they are EVERYWHERE between here and GA which I travel a lot between. I felt exactly how "Deaf Feminist Punk" Felt. Now that I'm older, I kind of see things in a different light.

I see it as something that can be thrown back into their faces. From what I gather, the flag was created during the Civil War as a symbol of the confederate states who wanted to secede the United States because they wanted to abolish slavery. Now that was a MAJOR factor but not the only factor. My point is…THEY LOST. The Union won and we became THE UNITED STATES in totality once again.

So the way I see it you can take it as oh they were the states that wanted to hold us back as slaves TAKE THE DAMN FLAG DOWN or say hey guess what this flag kinda declares MY INDEPENDENCE too because YOU (the confederates) started the war that eventually ended slavery. Put tons of effort into it and STILL lost. So next time you see one of those flags just look at em and say… YOU LOST THE WAR GET OVER IT!!! lmao
