Bill Hudson, a Minneapolis-Saint Paul news anchor, recently made a tremendous on-air gaffe that he now calls a "very humiliating experience." While trying to read a story about a Twin Cities neighborhood, Hudson slurred his words and accidentally said "nigger-hood." He didn't even notice his error until a colleague pointed it out at the end of their broadcast. The next day, Hudson issued a public apology that aired both on television and his station's Web site. He said he was "very embarrassed."
Case closed, right? Wrong. Tyrone Terrill, the Director of St. Paul's Human Rights department, is speaking out and equating Hudson's slip of the tongue with Don Imus' "nappy-headed hos" comment: "I can't believe it. …. Everybody says, 'It's a mistake, it's a mistake, it's a mistake.' They are not mistakes. I don't believe Don Imus' [slur] was a mistake…"
Perhaps the mistake was hiring Terrill, no?
I don't think its the same but why was he thinking the N-word?
What Chic Noir said
The whole nappy headed ho thing was much to do about nothing.
"Niggerhood" trumps that on EVERY front. If Don was fired, then I don't see why this dude is still gainfully employed.
You know what doesn't help? That Powderhorn's black and Latino population has grown exponentially in recent years. It's basically a black and brown neighborhood. It's also a poor community in Minneapolis. So, yeah, it compounds the insult.
That being said, I read the article and Hudson said he tripped over the word as he was reading it and it came out "neiggorhood." I'm not completely willing to jump on the nigger bandwagon. It sounds like he may have botched ONE LETTER and not really had some hidden bias. Plus, I truly think the St. Paul Human Rights department has much, much bigger fish to fry but likes to run after these little battles.
In case it wasn't abundantly clear, I live in the Twin Cities.
Well, the N-Word is wrong, but I have never seen white people call black people n-words but I have seen black people call white people stuff like "cracker", "honky", yet they never get in trouble at school, but if they hear a white kid say the n-word, which I will not say cause htis website probably doesn't want me saying it, the kids can get suspension. Is that fair? Is that not racist?
its just strange that that particular word rolled off his tongue. Im sure he didnt mean to say it but it still speaks to what is going through his mind. I'm sure he says it all the time with his friends.
good god, cord, why are you such an apologist for blatant racism? even if a patronizing apology is enough for you, this news anchor did something wrong and tyrone terill has every right to be offended and deal with the situation in a way that he sees fit. it's good to know that not only do you not want to hold people accountable for performing blackface, you don't mind if they explicitly say niggerhood on a news program either as long as they say they are sorry. pathetic.
don't you think it's a little INSANE that you advocate for the person who said the racial slur to keep his job, and for the person reacting to his utterance to lose his?
We don't call white people honky or cracker anymore that went out with the jeffersons. Lets be honest. We call them whiteboys, cavemen, and devils. For some reason thats okay.
