From the New York Times editorial board:
[Barack Obama's repudiation of Rev. Wright yesterday] was the most forthright repudiation of an out-of-control supporter that we can remember. We would like to say that it will finally take the racial charge out of this campaign. We’re not that naïve.
It is an injustice, a legacy of the racist threads of this nation’s history, but prominent African-Americans are regularly called upon to explain or repudiate what other black Americans have to say, while white public figures are rarely, if ever, handed that burden.
Senator John McCain has continued to embrace a prominent white supporter, Pastor John Hagee, whose bigotry matches that of Mr. Wright. Mr. McCain has not tried hard enough to stop a race-baiting commercial — complete with video of Mr. Wright — that is being run against Mr. Obama in North Carolina.
I can't think of any other reason than racism. The average white person seems to be hypersensitive to what goes on in black churches, and dismissive towards the likes of Hagee & Jerry Falwell, who are far more powerful and have, frankly, said far more offensive things than Rev Wright.
Every day that goes by, i get the feeling that america, lead by it's mass media agents, are not ready for a Black President. It's almost as if they let him run, then realized, 'Hey, he could ACTUALLY WIN' so they've found something they can attack him with and they've latched on for dear life, praying that it will be his demise. It just makes me so sad, because Obama wants to talk about the issues and all they throw at him is Rev. Wright and the flag pin.
Meanwhile all McCain has to say is, 'His views don't mirror my views' and people leave him alone.
Thank you for addressing this. I was discussing this with coworkers today.
To put it bluntly, Obama's Black and we're just not afforded the right to be individuals. Obama can't seem to shake off the RW nonsense.
RW ruffled the feathers of some ppl cuz of his language and his references to AIDS being a man-made disease. And he noted that he came to his conclusion from the Tuskegee syphillis experiment. Meanwhile, Falwell and his brain-dead drones can demonstrate outside of a dead soldier's funeral with signs bearing homophobic sentiments.
I still don't see anything wrong with what Rev. Wright said. No matter the hyperbole and "offensive" language, there was a message and if you wanted to hear it, you'd hear it.
I guess the more imminent issues aren't worthy of discussion. Were they ever? There should be no surprise over the obsession of a lapel pin made in China. I mean, this is the same country that gave Dubya a second term because he's a loud and proud homophobe.
Yes, his message is xenophobia and racism mixed with a good dose of self-righteousness. If he doesn't like the country, he is welcome to find greener pastures elsewhere. Talk about brainwashed, sheesh.
This may be overly simplistic but, I think the reason McCain hasn't gotten into any serious hot water over Hagee and his nonsense rhetoric is that he(McCain) locked up the GOP nomination ages ago. If he and Romney or Huckabee were locked in a political deathmatch like Obama and Clinton, its probably a safe bet the issue would've been brought up a few times at one of their debates.
Though truthfully, neither of those opponents(Huckabee and Romney) would have any legs to stand on the issue as both of their religious backgrounds and overall handling race and religion would shakier than a dope fiend coming off a high like no other.
LOL @ Esteban's last sentence.
LOL, McCain has a reason for not talking about his Obama's Pastor because he knew this was going to come out!!!!
No shit!!!!!!!!!!
