George Fox University is a small institution in Oregon founded by Quakers. That's why the president of the school was, by all accounts, genuinely surprised and dismayed to find that a group of students there had hung a cardboard likeness of Barack Obama from a tree. A sign on the figure said "Act Six reject." Act Six is a scholarship program that brings low-income and minority students to Christian colleges in the Northwest.
This act of racism is less about Barack Obama and more about students not wanting blacks at their school. To quote Tapped: "The message? Black students aren't welcome here. Racism is often rationalized with statements like 'if black people only worked harder, they'd do better.' But what often occurs is that when black people do perform with excellence, the hostility becomes more pronounced, as in this case, rather than actually subsiding."
I saw this racism and ignorance coming
This all ties in with the use of the word uppity. White people what blacks to "act right" and "do the right thing" as long as we know our place and stay in our lane. The scary thing is that unlike the unbridled racism of the past, this latent racism takes longer to bubble to the surface. These same white people may not exhibit racist tendencies, not because they aren't bigoted, but because they don't fear us. But as soon as we rise to positions of prominence - school valedictorian, boss, presidential nominee - the ugliness comes out. The truly scary thing is that many of these overtly racist acts are being perpetrated by young people, even as many in the media continue to talk about how colour blind the younger generation is.
White people believe that we are in the same predicament as they are, and that we all start off on an equal footing..but unfortunately that is not the case, the judicial, educational, and even political system is based on a Caucasian values, morals, and ethics….
We didnt help build this country collectively (we did but not as equals), we weren’t in attendance when the bill of rights or constitution was being written up, we were brought to this land and made to work by force, and after that 300 years, we were still treated less human…and thrown into ghettos as if we were the jewish in the holocaust..
We have a huge handicap, and the odds are against us,but people don't see it, in there mind its like "slavery is done, get over it"…but is it really there fault? or is the educational system that was not made for us…
Please. He got into Harvard Law without disclosing his legacy status or his race. I guess students at 3rd tier schools don't have the faculties to process that well-publicized fact.
Way to shame the Quakers.
HAHAHAHA!!!
LET'S MAKE AN EFFIGY OF McCUNT AND LYNCH THE WHITE CRACKER!!!
now is that so funny? I fucking hate dumb white racist fucks.
It seems like whenever a single incident of overt racism is shown on this blog, some people act like the perpetrators are acting on behalf of all white people.
@ Jason
I completely understand what you are saying but a blog dedicated to issues that might appeal to black people is like a barbershop in the hood. There will be some level of generalization and exaggeration. The students here are nameless and since its racism we have to call them something and the easiest thing to call them is white people. The tough part is hoping that we are responsible enough to know and understand that we are generalizing. You just have to give the folks here the benefit of the doubt. That's one luxury that we should have. When we say something that can be taken as a generalization or out of context we don’t have to follow it with, "but I have a best friend that is white." So let folks get away with saying white people when they could be more specific.
."
So in other words, cut us some slack for being just as lazy thinking and shrill as the people we are denouncing. Right?
I understand that, and I'm not even disputing the fact that there is a LOT of racism among whites. I just know (and I speak for a lot of white people here) that when discussions like this come up and "white people" are identified as the problem, it almost feels like we're not allowed to NOT be racist, like we're supposed to be locked into racism by virtue of our whiteness no matter what. It's not as big a deal to me as I'm probably making it sound, I'm not profoundly offended or anything, I just think this is a perspective that doesn't get addressed much so I thought I'd bring it up.
this is one of the saddest and most upsetting things i've read all day. =(
alex~ honest question. what are 'caucasian values, morals and ethics'?
Jason, I just want to express my anger and disgust at racist white people. so sue me.
My comment was more in response to Jamal and Alex. I share your anger and disgust at racist white people.
An open letter to the person who hung Barack Obama in effigy at George Fox University:
Lack of evidence to the contrary, I'll assume you're a student there at George Fox. So you've surely been chastised for behaving un-Christianly. And then there's the horrible stain you've put on Quakers, who, after all, led the abolition movement. I add my voice to the chorus on both counts, and go one further.
My young friend, take a walk with me to Ross Center, the visual and performing arts building on your campus. It's been awhile since I've been there, but I'm sure the portrait of Milo and Alice Ross is still on display. Milo was president of this school for 15 years. His vision is what put George Fox (then College) on the map. He believed being a Christian meant having higher standards. Your university is rightly proud of its national reputation, and it was Milo Ross who led the way by getting the school accredited for the first time.
In addition to academic excellence, Milo and Alice left a legacy of racial inclusion and tolerance, befitting their Quaker heritage. They provided a home for students from places like Jordan and Kenya. To be a guest in their home was to be treated with grace and dignity, no matter what color your skin was. The Act Six program also bears witness to their legacy. They lived their belief that justice and equality wouldn't be achieved without positive action and support from those able to provide it.
Look – there's the portrait. Go stand in front of Milo and Alice Ross, and let me introduce you to my grandparents. Let's tell them how your deed has put this now thriving institution on the map in a new way. Look at them and feel their hearts break because of what you have done.
Yours in hope,
Karen (Eichenberger) Lollis
there is only one race: The Human race. Watch the film: Race the Power of illusion from PBS. We are all homeo sapiens
Also people, Obama is just as white as he is black so racism is all about people only focusing on the black "part" (as if there were such a thing!) of him. Colin Powel is as Irish as he is black. Color is an illuision and a social construct, not a biological one, watch the film. I use it for graduate classes here in Vermont.
It is amazing to me how quickly people are ready to jump on the racist bandwagon. The effigy of Obama, was a political joke, not an ugly racist act. I actually thought it was pretty clever. To make a statement about the lack of ability in leadership that one of the presidential candidates has….was very creative. Tying a cardboard cutout of Obama with a sign that he would have been an “Act Six Reject” was genius. If you actually THINK about it….but then I don’t expect many journalists to do that these days. It is more fun to wave the racist banner than it is to get to the bottom of the story. Act Six Scholarships are given out to students who demonstrate leadership potential…not just minorities, but all students (some perhaps, because of financial struggles). But the Act Six Reject referenced the fact that whoever was wearing the sign, did NOT have the leadership potential to LEAD…therefore, they were a reject for the scholarship program. DUH! IT had nothing to do with race. It was a political statement about the lack of leadership potential in OBAMA. HELLO!! And fishing line was PURPOSELY used and NOT rope (they had rope) so people would not confuse the issue of race…this was NOT a racial attack, but a political JOKE! And all of the media (LIBERALS) jumped at the chance to turn this into a racial attack to bring more attention to Obama. What a sad state of affairs. You Journalist make me sick.
@JaneDoe:
Really? Hang on, because I need a moment to process the magnitude of your stupidity.
You think that symbolically LYNCHING a cutout of a black man is a purely POLITICAL statement?
If McCain were Jewish and I made a huge cutout of him, but I photoshopped it so he was gaunt and haggard, then added a prison tattoo to his forearm and placed it in the context of a concentration camp, would you say that it was a political attack?
You say that they purposefully used fishing line and not rope, so that magically takes away the connotations of lynching? You are a moron.
Also, let's go with the assumption that you are purely so chock full of independent journalistic integrity that you managed to see with a clarity that the rest of us lack. You are automatically a dumbass for the following statement: "And all of the media (LIBERALS) jumped at the chance to turn this into a racial attack…" Yes. Because ALL of the media is composed of liberals. That HAS to be the logical conclusion, right? I mean, it couldn't be that it was a stupidly tasteless act, right?
If you want to support McCain, do it. But hang a McCain/Palin sign on your door, don't make an effigy of the opposition and expect people not to cry "hate". Know why? Because it is hateful, regardless of the motivation. I have a sign on my lawn, not an effigy in my tree.
@Julia: It was done, in Massachusetts an Obama supporter hung an effigy (mannequin) of Sarah Palin by a noose (a real one, not just an image suspended by fishing line for visibility). They shrugged it off as freedom of artistic expression.
@Deaf Feminist Punk and Jason: Wouldn't the equal rights wording of that statement be "I hate racist people"? White people have not cornered the market on racism; plenty of people from other cultures and colors are and have been equally racist as your "racist white people" statements are.
RACISM defined:
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
(Note: no mention of black people as victims and white people as perpetrators. Racism is racism, regardless of the person committing the act thereof.)
I don't care what color someone is! Let's get back to the facts: BO is for live birth abortions; that is something I cannot sit back and take lightly; babies cannot defend themselves! BO is for increasing business' taxes. In today's economy that is not going to grow the economy. He is for UNIONS. If he gets in the lazy person is going to get the same as the hard worker. Skin color makes no difference here. There is no hatred here for BO; he has some way off ideas of what is right and what is wrong.
