All the headlines imply that all Barack Obama did at last night's address at the NAACP convention in Cincinnati was preach that blacks need to accept more personal responsibility. In reality, what he did in the 20 minute speech was explain how the government, the corporate world, and individuals all need to "do what they're supposed to do" in order to make the American Dream happen. He spoke about the need for better economic policies, health care, and school reform. Of course, he also reiterated some of his points in his Father's Day speech and did stress personal responsibility. He said:
"As much as I'm out there fighting to make sure government is doing its job, and the marketplace is doing its job, and we're passing laws to bring more investment and more education and more infrastructure to our community and putting our young people back to work… No matter how much money we invest in our community, how many 10-point plans we propose, how many government programs we launch, none of it will make a difference, at least not much of a difference, if at the same time we don't seize more responsibility in our lives… We need politicians to do what they're supposed to do, and we need CEOs to do what they're supposed to do, and we need parents to do what they're supposed to do. That's how we'll truly honor those who came before us."
In front of National Association For the Advancement of Colored People, the sentiment certainly didn't seem out of place.
Enough said - Now sit your ass down Jesse and stop hating.
