Obama's Pastor Ruffles Feathers
You Can Say the N-Word in Church?

Here it is, the fiery polemic from Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's pastor, the man who baptized both Obama's daughters and who married Barack and his wife, Michelle. According to Slate, Wright's been taking a lot of heat on the Internet since the above sermon ended up on YouTube. Though his speech was long and weighty, the Reverend is being chastised specifically for these comments:

Wright said the United States brought the 9/11 attacks on itself through its own "terrorism." And "the government gives [blacks] the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America." And, in the most attention-grabbing line, that "Hillary Clinton has never been called a nigger."

That'll wake you up on Sunday!

For those offended, you must ask yourself if you disagree with what Wright said or the manner in which he said it? Remember, church is theater, and sermons follow suit. What Wright meant, in secular terms, is that black people want to elect someone with whom they can empathize, and that Hillary Clinton doesn't understand the black experience in America, nor can she ever. And nobody can argue with that.

What really cuts Wright's sermon off at the knees is that Barack Obama himself doesn't fit the mold of "black American" all that well. Not only is he half white, his parents were both college educated (one with an advanced degree from Harvard), he was raised in Honolulu, he's got degrees from two Ivy League schools, he's a Senator and he's a bestselling author. Goodness, pastor, if only all blacks could be so unfortunate.

Is Jossip about to go corporate?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03.....101682.htm

Growing up baptist, this the typical hootin' and hollerin' I'm used to in church so I'm not offended really. But the pastor is making Obama into something he's not…for the very reasons you said the argument gets cut off at the knees, Cord. We have to be very careful when people like this speak - this has been posted other places and he's being called a racist. See, we can't have our cake and eat it, too, folks. I don't think he's a racist, he's just wrong about some things and is being really, really LOUD about it.

um…this is a church sermon or a fox news show? I don't care who pastor you are, you do not talk politics in church. Thats could be why I do not go.

Two bigots.
Ferraro is anti-Blacks.
Wright is anti-America.
This question is, How could Obama have tolerated that bigot, were his views a secret?

Ferraro, I am sure Hillary knew of her anti-male and anti-Blacks views before, because stories are now coming out about her past behaviour, Why allow her near the campaign?

Politics has been in the black church since we started meeting. Right or wrong. In this case, it has gone really wrong with all of that unChrist-like anger. It is truly disconcerting.

What is the mold of the "black American"? I'm not mad, I'm just sayin….

The beauty of blackness is that we come in all colors, socioeconomic and educational statuses.

Cord, are you implying that BO has had it just as easy as HRC b/c he is only HALF white? As if that matters in America. I know many biracial people that are they are always forced to be identified as black NOT biracial consequently taking the hits that all AA's take!

From everything I have learned about his background it certainly doesn't appear to be equal to HRC.

Politics and black churches are very inter-related. In the height of the civil rights movement, a lot of organizing and strategizing took place in churches. Supporters and marchers were recruited out of black churches. Religion and politics don't completely divorce themselves, in some communities.

totally agree with your read of this, Cord. 1) church is theatre. 2) BO doesn't fit the mold of a stereotypical black american. that is, he has, and has had more privilege than most (black americans).

had i been at this service, i would have laughed and hollered and gone home entertained. which is what church is for me.

No comment EXCEPT that even though Passa Wright spoke truths, I still don't feel Obama is qualified for the presidency.

Yes I voted for Hillary and WHAT?

That passa could very well have sunk Obamas' campaign with his foolishness. After watching that, you would think Barack was some poor black child come up from the ghetto, instead of the worldly, internationally travelled, ivy league graduated professional he really is.

Ugh. Okay.

Wright said the United States brought the 9/11 attacks on itself through its own “terrorism.”
You could say that of policy makers and the government but his statement infers that the people essentially deserved to die and that's some bullshit. Yes, U.S. policy isn't ideal but I don't really think the U.S. can take any action (including choosing inaction) without consequence.

And “the government gives [blacks] the drugs
True, but they don't force it into the bodies of its users. There is choice at work and the vast majority of blacks including those living in the same shitty conditions choose not to use drugs.

builds bigger prisons
true.

passes a three-strike law Okay. I just spent the whole weekend shell-shocked at a (black) rapist who has raped several presumably black, mostly middle-aged women before and served some time. He's maybe 40 years old. He raped and assaulted yet another in her own house for hours. Why is a man who has raped several other women out on the street? He is obviously mentally ill (he said it was "karma, baby" and it made him feel "like God," taunting the judge and the victim during and after his sentencing). I really **want** to believe in rehabilitation but unlike this reverend and Sharpton, I don't agree in ruining the lives of countless innocent black people for the sake of giving someone a third, fourth or fifth chance.

and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America.” …and you're still better off than probably 90% of people on earth. Thank your lucky stars that you live in a country where you can even complain about the government and more likely than not, your vote is counted because these are PRIVILEGES that many others don't have. You take it for granted because you've always had it.

“Hillary Clinton has never been called a nigger.”
Also true, but Obama's never been called a bitch nor has he been vilified for his ambition. And? Does that mean they are good choices? I say no to both and it has nothing to do with what name they've been called. I've been called a "bitch" countless times by males, females, blacks and whites. I've had "nigger" directed at me specifically once by a white man. As I now put my ADD and Ritalin-fueled ideas on paper and want to make something of them, I'm starting to understand that "noble" pursuits for women are basically nurturing the dreams of others. Does that make me relate to Hilary more on a human level? Yes. Does that mean I fully support her? No. Obama and I share the brilliant deadbeat daddy thing and the ability to turn into bronze hotties in the sun. Does that make me relate to him more on a human level? Yes. Does that mean I fully support him? No. I can't pick someone to run the country based on similarity of some experiences. Perhaps I would take that into account if I were voting for president of black America or a spokesperson (cuz the status quo is pitiful), but that he's been called a nigger doesn't mean shit to me considering the war, economy, etc. His unique experience as a black person isn't really relevant to his ability to clean up the messes made in the last 6 or so years. It's not going to solve the mortgage crisis that disproportionately affects blacks. It's not going to improve education, even for black kids, because his academic background was far stronger than that of damn near everyone, black or white. It's not going to fix health disparities that we already know how to address on paper but have yet to put into practice. Same goes for Hillary. Most of the nation's leaders attended Harvard and/or Yale. White House, Supreme Court, Senate and some of the House. They were pretty much all privileged so why on earth do you think their race or gender give them some unique perspective? I'm working on a program for "inner city" (Dorchester and Roxbury in Boston) girls, mostly black and Latina. Do you know what the brilliant idea is? Get the brilliant ones into magnet, prep and Christian schools on scholarships so their minds don't rot with the glorified babysitting that passes as "school"! And that is the most effective solution that I, a young black woman can come up with because I know that works. Unless Obama (and Clinton) is somehow going to bless every American child with intelligence, ambition, at least one well-educated, nurturing parent and Harvard legacy status, his experience as a black man isn't really going to come in handy on education issues. Social justice issues? Hmmm. The next president will almost certainly appoint at least 2 Supreme Court Justices and other than giving speeches, that's about as far as his power goes. Hilary' remained outspoken on the abortion issue which I like because the spineless lib brigade started wavering on it when it became highly unpopular in 04. Again, love the idea but the extent of her influence will likely be with appointing judges.

Daria - yes, we brought 911 on ourselves, but the people didn't deserve to die.

God damn America. Black folks exist in a unique place where we can simultaneously love America for the great things, but also critique and feel a great sense of disappointment. Our history and contributions are frequently altered or erased, the fact that this country was built on our backs is something we're always told to "get over" and we are the only race that - yes, I believe this - this country is trying to eradicate. They've tried it all - disease, drugs, pushing us into ghettos. Now they are just ignoring us….turning a blind eye to the poverty, failed education system and crime that overwhelmingly affects us. If 50% of black kids drop out of high school what happens to them? Drugs, crime, etc. Right. Now add 50 years onto that problem. I think there are people who hope that we'll become virtually extinct within in this country. If half of us will be asking, "want super size fries with that quarter pounder" this country will be well on its way to getting rid of us. America rid itself of that pesky problem it had with the indigenous people here and we've always been the next target.
