Old Jokes Are Not Like Black Jokes
Poor Logic

Maybe it's because we get off on making fun of wacky old people, but we don't think there's much merit to Tom D'Antoni's recent Huffington Post piece, "Stop 'Old' Jokes Now!" which argues that jokes about the elderly are as offensive as cracks about blacks or Jews.

The time has come to stop making "Old Jokes." I shouldn't have to say that. In most societies old age is respected for accrued wisdom. Not in ours. In ours you get ridiculed, marginalized and completely discounted as though wrinkles and other natural aging processes disqualified a person from being a member of the human race. Worse, that normal aging qualifies the rest of the world to make fun of you.

Try this: substitute the word, "Nigger" or "Jew" or "Bitch" or "Sand Nigger" or "Dago" for "old," either literally or conceptually. Now how does it sound? Still think it's funny?

Um, wrong. It's fine to make old jokes, and here's why: Because time is not a lady; she's a whore that comes knocking on everyone's door, year after year, until we're all dust. Unlike ethnicity or color or poverty, old age is an affliction confronted by literally everyone in the world, thus, it's also something about which everyone can joke. The only people who can't make fun of the aged are vampires. Now, sit your old ass down, Tommy.

Here's the real - RACISM at any level, joking or whatever will never stop. You can't stop Racism. It's a shame but the truth and not a joke.

"because time is not a lady; she’s a whore that comes knocking on everyone’s door"

Really, Cord? You seem like way too smart a guy to be pulling that kind of sexist b.s.; I agree with what you're saying - I just wish you could've found a different way to say it.

cord is a natural feminist, don't worry about him there : a whore is NOT gender specific. i've known many a man-whore.
ANYHOW where were we? oh yes, i wanted to say: BRILLIANT. and also that i would looooove nothing more than to be a vampire - their accuracy and ethereal good looks will get ya every time.

Actually I think D'Antoni kind of has a point. Although 'old' jokes are probably not the cause of age discrimination I do think the prevalence of old jokes does kind of show how our society has a fear and repulsion of growing older. 'Old' is a three-letter word in our society. Don't believe? I know people who have nearly come to blows/burst into tears at being called 'sir/ma'am.'

I try my best not to gauge the harmfulness of slurs on others for the most parts but I've never considered "old" to be a slur, just outdated and politically incorrect. What's the appropriate term? Elderly? That's the difference between "Black" and "Negro."

If old jokes were so bad then old people wouldn't crack on themselves. My grand-daddy constantly makes fun of his own age (89 by the way). During his last birthday, while everyone was singing Happy Birthday, he gets up and goes over to a bouquet of flowers & starts blowing on it (Like the candles on the cake). By this time everyone is giving him the side eye. He looks up and says "Ya'll thought I lost it didn't you?", then starts laughing at us because of the looks on our faces.

I would not go around telling "old" jokes, but please believe when the elderly start dishing I will laugh.

If I haven't the grace to be gone by the time Cord becomes "old", I hope he's able to find the funny in unemployment and underemployment should he live past the age of 45. Ageism isn't your grandfather making you laugh; it's basic financial demands that cannot be met, because you simply can't get work. It's real, it's ugly, and it's growing.
So, while you, Cord, declare it perfectly fine to goof on old folks; I still hope you're not on the receiving end of them, should you ever have to choose between food, shelter, medication, or warmth. Or maybe you'll just get such a belly laugh out of that situation, it won't even matter to you then, either.

It's going a bit too far to compare old people with blacks and other racial minorities. I mean, I can see what the author was trying to say.

I think it's important we should respect and take care of our elders, BUT there's nothing wrong with making a joke once in a while.

However there's a fine difference. There's a harmless joke and then there's cruel taunting.

Meik, that's not the standard for determining offensiveness. People of all groups (blonds, Mexicans, "hicks," black people, Indians, Koreans, women, etc.) tell jokes about their own groups all the time.

Megs & Kjen I don't think Cord is saying its okay to goof on old folks.

I did not want to go here as my coment above but have old people in this country been lynched because they are old? What about placed in concentration camps? burned in ovens? Are there a large number of books published in this country about why we should kill off all of our elderly people ?

smh, so the fucked up way adults treat youth is okay because eventually the youth will grow up and have control over future kids? yeah, whatever.

I think a moment should be taken to look at rather as to 'whom' is getting offended, than keep trying to analyize the 'why'…I think most people would agree to keep having these 'old persons' jokes, my theory being they take away from other rascist, fascist and degrating comments. The people being bothered by these cracks are those obviously choosing to listen to them; knowing so many that they had to turn a form of simple entertainment into a debate as to be banned from speaking of blasphemy? Instead of just asking to either be exused or tell a different joke? NOPE: they rather throw a fit…
