One Bookstore Has A Hard Time Balancing Terry McMillan's Books And Her Ex-Husband's

Jonathan Plummer, the man responsible for both the giving and the taking away of Terry McMillan's infamous groove, has written the gay, gold-digging version of O.J.'s If I Did It, and booksellers are responding to it in a similar way — by banning it from their shelves.

At least one bookstore — Marcus Books in Oakland — has decided not to carry Plummer's novel, Balancing Act, which is based on the man's "discovery," "during" his marriage to uber-author Terry McMillan, that he was in no way shape or form a straight man. Funny how that happens after you marry the millionaire novelist.

In a press release, Plummer's manager has implied that stores blocking his novel are anti-gay. It's probably more likely they're pro-McMillan.

That seems like a slippery slope for booksellers to ban titles because they don't like the content. Even if they aren't homophobic, which I'll assume they're not, the precedent could certainly pave the way to reject future titles on that basis. Whatever could be their reasoning, unless, given that she lives in NoCal, it's personal?

I wouldn't be surprised if Terry McMillan had a relationship with the bookstore.

Well, are they selling OJ's book? Or Jim McGreevey's? Both are garbage. If I owned a bookstore, I would maintain the right to screen out garbage. I went to a McGreevey book reading and he's a disgusting cheater. I loathe him and it has nothing to do with him being gay. The way he treated his wife post-outing was unforgivable. And it continues.

I'm sure that bookstore is selling plenty of E. Lynn Harris books. I don't think it's an anti-gay thing. It may be more of a pro-Terry thing. Marcus Books is a black bookstore that has been around for a while so may feel some loyalty to her.

The relationship I have with Marcus Bookstores is the same as I have with other bookstores that sell books by African-American authors. I have been an avid supporter of Marcus as well as other AA Bookstores since my first novel, MAMA, was published in 1987. Jonathan's so-called "manager" is Mark Plummer, his cousin, (a/k/a Trola Mae: see http://www.blackvoices.com comments)and the two of them are just angry because no one's buying this trash being paraded as a novel which Jonathan didn't even write. He, like his publisher, are both opportunists trying to cash in on my fame and his relationship to me. He should be ashamed of what he's done and how he did it, but this book is a testament to the fact that he feels no guilt or shame in what he did and how he did it, which is basically the equivalent of a rapist writing about how he raped his victim and then decides to publish it. He makes me sick, and bookstores as well as intelligent people know precisely what he's done and why he's doing it. For the reasons he's done everything else: for his own benefit. The only problem is, God don't like ugly which is why he and his cousin are now lashing out at bookstores and trying to accuse the of the same thing they accused me of, which is homophobia. Rejecting this book, like my anger at Jonathan, does not make me or them homophobic. Their shelves are lined with books by both gay and lesbian authors. He should take a hint: everybody can't be punk'd and they have a right not to carry his book if they so chose. I would also not be surprised if he or his cousin aren't responsible for the negative comments. They seem to enjoy doing this, but especially making me out to be the evil-doer when they should both take a long long look in the mirror.

Visit my blog "comment-terry" or my website at http://www.terrymcmillan.com to see how I feel about how well he balanced while acting. As Mary Monroe says: "God still don't like ugly."

There is still room for dignity and honesty,

Terry McMillan

There's accountability on BOTH people in this situation…he was too young…and she was too mature to mess with a boy that young…

Ms. Terry has ALWAYS used her own life to fuel the fire of her books…so why can't her ex-husband…

JUST LET IT GO!!!

Let's get a few things straight–err– I mean clear.

1) Balancing act was "ghost written" by Karen Hunter. Ms. Hunter writes books for people who cannot write books on their own. Listen to Jonathan Plummer speak, he is inarticulate, and often bursts into girlish giggles.

2) Jonathan Plummer is pushing 35 and is merely an out of work dog-groomer and sometimes hair stylist. He is not handsome enough to model, even though he portays himself– err– I mean "Justin" as a male supermodel. There has never been a male super model. Certainly if there existed a male supermodel he would be handsome. Not just sort if cute in an effiminate sort of way.

3) Do you ever see pictures of Jonathan's cousin, Mark Plummer??? Well, he is short, obese, wears glasses, and has a receding hairline. Once could easily call him gnome-like. And if you think Jonathan sounds girlish, listen to Mark speak.

4) The book has officially bombed. Tanked. Died. No one is buying it. Not African-Americans, not gays, or as Jonathan might say "Not nobody".

5) As for Jonathan and Mark Plummer's "fame", here is a typical conversation:

"Mark Plummer"

"Who?"

"Jonathan Plummer's cousin."

"Who?"

"Terry McMillan's gay ex-husband."

"Who?"

"The writer of "Waiting to Exhale".

"Oh that movie Whitney was in when she was clean and sober, wasn't that about 15 years ago".

"Yeah, that one."

"Who cares."

No one!
