Oprah and Martha and Tyra (?), Oh My!

tyranym.jpg

Tyra has been known to fake like she doesn't desperately want to be Oprah Winfrey, but since we all know that's not true, we also know that she has got to be dying over this Sunday's New York Times Magazine cover, even though something about that nude lip is giving me the creeps.

In the cover story we learn about Tyra's 275 smiles, including "angry but smiling," "flirting with boyfriend," and, I'm guessing, the infamous "smiling with your eyes." But that's not all — the author investigates the Tyra brand, which, ridiculous as it often seems, follows quite a winning formula.

"Like her hero, Martha Stewart, Banks wants, most of all, for her name to immediately suggest a distinct point of view. Her brand, like her trademark 'tough but still smiling' smile, is consistent in all her shows: serious about the frivolous; empathetic and empowering, and always, always aimed at young women, across all races. It's girly TV with a punch."

What pretend world does she live in?

275 is a lot, but as a professional in a visual medium, she should know how to make a wide range of subtly different facial expressions and poses

I think that her talk show is so corny. I can only watch for a few minutes then I have to change the channel.

Great for Tyra!

She's doing her own thing, and doing it well.

I really can't watch Tyra's show. It usually goes overboard in trying to show a point of view. I, however, am very happy to see that Tyra is successful.

I just wish she would lose the weave!

I like her show. I won't ever complain about her or Oprah because there aren't any other black-hosted talk shows that I know of. I think her shows are fun and they cover some interesting topics and racial issues. I like the cover too actually. Good for you Tyra :)

I like tyra also, and I must say that she as a talk show host has improved since season one.

Oh. Poor Ty Ty. She has to have 275 looks and all Ms. Naomi has to do to be twice the model she is is one walk.

@Chic Noir. Yeah, I'm biased. All my knowledge of her talk show is from The Soup, so maybe she has improved? I know for a fact people are watching her show, so I wish her the best. Even if I can't stand her.

There's nothing poor about Tyra. I do agree that Naomi was a better supermodel than she Tyra ever was, but the former is a trainwreck fuckup. Tyra wisely turned her former supermodel status into a multi million dollar tv empire with two hit franchises.

Naomi is just a constant embarrasment to herself, and a menace to society in general. The woman is almost 40, and her sell by date has been more than extended. What will she do then??

You know, as much as Miss Ty gets on my nerves, I have to give her props for doing her thing. She is a very smart businesswoman.

Caring not for the story, BMD notes how awesome the cover pic is.

I used to watch her show just to laugh at how bad it was and how arrogant she is. Now, she's still arrogant, and the show is still pretty bad, but I find it rather entertaining. It makes me chuckle when she has topics about black women and has guests come on to break down racism 101 topics like they're new ideas. I'm glad she's stopped inviting Janice Dickinson on every other day; that woman is batty.
