Oscar Nominations Are Out; An Oscar Ceremony Is Probably Out, Too

rubydee.jpgThe Writers' Strike has pretty much zapped any awards season excitement, but the Oscar nominations were announced today. Nothing for Denzel Washington, which is surely an outrage to many of you, but Ruby Dee was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for American Gangster and, uh, Norbit was nominated for best makeup. An Oscar and a Razzie nomination in one week! Incredible.

Having seen all of the films nominated for best picture, my bet's on No Country For Old Men, although Atonement won the Golden Globe. Check out the nominations after the jump.

I love these nominations (for the most part), but I thought Paul Dano should have gotten a supporting actor nof for his steller performance in "There will be blood". I also think "The diving bell and the butterfly" should have gotten a best picture nod. Curious that they nominated the films director (Julian Schabel), and not the film. Duh

Yay for Marion Cotillard for her amazing turn in "La vie en rose", and i'm so happy for Ruby Dee. Is this her first nod?

Sorry for Denzel, but i'm glad "American Gangster" got shut out for the most part. The film was the glorification of an ignorant thug, and nothing more.

Maybe these production companies and producers will think about this the next time they think about cutting those writers out of pay for something that they helped to create.

I'm still pissed that this awards show continues to NOT honor the 'Science Fiction' & 'Horror/Thriller' movies categories.

Horror movies are a huge part of the movie industry that deserve to be recognized. Plus, I LOVE a good horror movie.

Jilly - Sci-fi and horror flicks usually have their own awards. Usually handed out at conventions like ComicCon.

These writers and the networks need to work. this. shit. out. NOW.

If I miss the Oscar fashions, I will protest against the protesters. Just agree to a ceasefire or something. Golden Globe fashions are so-so anyway. It's the homecoming dance. Oscars = Prom.

I usually throw a much anticipated Oscar party ever year. I'm sad that I won't get to do that. Otherwise - if someone I know isn't moninated…I don't care as much anymore.

BMD,

That blows though. Horror is such an underrated genre. There are horror movies that deserve an award. An example is 'The Descent'.

I am beyond sad about Heath. I LOVED "Brokeback Mountain" and was looking forward to seeing him as the Joker. Now, part of me doesn't even want to see it.

So sad.

Jilly - Horror has a special place in my heart b/c I specialize in character and creature effects. Most of the bigger films I have worked on have either been sci-fi or horror - granted they've been indie or B-flicks.

Once again, like the Grammy's, the Oscars (IMO) are grappling for any old nonsense to garner viewers. Norbit? Okay…
