Our Furry Friends

gp_pattilabellemaryjblige.jpg

As PETA dug down to the very depths of their creative reserves to design this racially-questionable and, considering the man's two-year prison sentence and current state of financial ruin, rather unnecessary Michael Vick e-card, they totally missed a prime, red-paint-splashing opportunity at Mary J. Blige's Growing Pains album release party. Patti LaBelle and MJB look oh so happy and warm under several layers of fur while their animal indifference goes unchecked. More pics after the jump.

Great card, helped me take out my aggression for our 3 game win season.

I didn't find the card racially questionable. It's probably the least questionable of the Vick cartoons I've seen.

I'm not quite sure how two people who claim to have such great concern for the humanity of others seem to have zero regard for the very cruel treatment of animals. I loathe pretty much all animals that are commonly used for clothes with the exception of foxes, but I don't want to wear them and I don't want to be a part of the cruelty. It's some Jeffrey Dahmer shit. You have to be very f-ed up to do what fur farmers are doing and supporting such an industry is sick. Congrats to them. They look like 20 lbs heavier walking around like hood rats that just got some money. W00t. Celebrate with your peers Kool G Rap and K Fraud.

I own fur. I wear fur. I also wear leather shoes and eat steak. Not down with wearing endangered species but ranch raised mink isn't any different than ranch raised cattle.

It's already dead when I walk in the store. Me buying the coat won't change that.

it wouldn't be in the store if you didn't buy it.

i'm totally with you, daria. i don't support animals being raised simply to be killed for their skin. i haven't eaten meat in over 20 years, but because other people do i don't have a big problem with leather. but fur, forget it. unless you live in antarctica you don't need to be wearing it. period.

There were furriers before I was born. There will be furriers after I'm gone. Whether I never set foot in another one, (which I intend to right after the holidays) people will continue to use animals to their own purposes.

We'll agree to disagree on this one. You won't wear it. I will.

I don't wear leather or fur, and I haven't eaten meat in over 20 years. If you're concerned about your carbon footprint, you might want to cut back on eating or wearing your meat. Cattle have a significant negative impact on the environment. People WILL stop using it when resources become so scarce that feeding people is urgent and feeding cattle is redundant.
On the other hand, people who wear fur don't look so good. But I guess looking heinous is still an option, even if its at the expense of the environment and the animal.

In my family people think minks are some type of status… As is… since I know they dont have money like that I understand why thier lights went off the very next week. I dont wear fur its not cute to me and it is sad there are other ways to keep warm.

So in honor of PETA lets get all the people who wear fur line them up on the sidewalk by a busy road right when a lot of snow is melting and let a bus speed by and splash them. Thier cries will prob be more painful than the poor animals that were killed.

There are lots of ways to look bad. Bitter is one of them.

This is still a somehat free country. You're free to speak against fur and I'm free to spend my money on it. Let the better message win.

okay - i have been lurking on this board for months (since Tia mentioned on her sight) and while nearly moved to post in the past…this one requires a response….leaving the pro-con fur argument aside, the reason PETA hasn't run up on Patti or Mary is because both of them would chase the paint throwers down and commence to whoopin' up on 'em. PETA ain't stupid, they are just like my girl Naomi - only punk those who are too afraid of you or who might not swing back on ya!!!!!!!

Carry -on!

I don't think PeTA's tactics are particularly effective. Many are counter-productive. I know that there are far more militant animals rights groups out there.

If you wear fur knowing about fur farming practices, you are definitely a bad person. It's just like those who know about DeBeers and their bullshit "reforms" and continue to support them.

That B.S. complacency is trouble. It's that attitude that allowed avoidable atrocities to continue. The fact that it exists doesn't mean I need to partake in it. The market bends to consumers' desires.

As for animal consumption, though I am a "flexivegan," I'm not morally opposed to animal consumption necessarily because my reason for choosing this lifestyle was my health. My parents are never going to choose this lifestyle. I've gotten them to buy more local, more organic, more hormone free, more additive free foods. It tastes better. They don't drink milk. The idea of consuming another animal's milk is just gross and unheard of in my culture. It's breast milk then goat then cow. Americans consume far more dairy than almost every country in the world yet we have one of the highest rates of osteoporosis. It's unnecessary.

Wearing fur is A LOT more eco friendly than wearing most of the clothes we wear today (which include synthetics, etc that leave carbon imprents on the earth during production). As long as the sources of fur are from abundant/sustainable supplies, there's nothing wrong with fur. Though, I hate "mink" coats are more of a luxury than a necessity. I would throw red paint on them myself just to piss them off.

I agree with divaliscious11.

I don't own a mink coat, but I have alligator, eel skin and other exotic skin purses and shoes. I buy vintage so they are already used. They've already been bought by someone else so I don't catch feelings over it. Besides…eels are yucky. (joke!)

I agree with divaliscious11 - they won't throw paint at either of those sistas, because they would get a foot up their asses immediately afterward. I understand both sides of the fur debate, but I am *much* more concerned with black folks getting killed by cops, than I am with animals getting killed for furs.

Ike, that is entirely inaccurate.
1. Eco-friendly = protecting the environment and wildlife. The fact that even faux fur is now being found to be dog, cat and raccoon fur is troublesome.
2. Fur is treated with many chemicals (=air and water pollutants) and transported from country to country (=carbon emissions).
3. The sources of fur = dogs, cats, raccoons and minks that spend their lives in deplorable conditions before being cruelly killed. Clubbed seals from Canada. Endangered foxes. Why are they killed in the way that they are (electric shock then skinning while still alive)? No clue. It seems unnecessary as does clubbing baby seals.
4. Most cotton, hemp, bamboo, wool, silks, etc. are more sustainable and eco-friendly.
5. Fur is not sustainable as animals become extinct. Several types of foxes, tigers, lions and sea lions have become extinct in the last 50 or so years do to this industry.

Oh. Found a list of a few:
-Bali tiger (thanks to Europeans)
-Tasmanian tiger (thanks to Europeans)
btw, the reason why Europeans had to go elsewhere for their fur is because they'd killed off all of their desirable animals

Daria–

You're speaking about the current fur industry. I'm talking about simply wearing fur. There are green ways of producing and wearing it. And I don't advocate wearing furs from endangered species, hence me saying "sustainable/abundant supplies."
