Paris Fashion Week A Total Wash
More of the Same

models.jpgDon't expect to see many black models at Paris Fashion Week. Top designers, who are doing some preemptive damage control, say so themselves. They blame the agencies, which they say have a limited selection of models and color and an overwhelming number of Eastern Europeans.

"I asked the modelling agency for black girls for our next show but there simply aren’t any," said Mario Lefranc, half of the Lefranc-Ferrant designer duo, one of 40-odd labels presenting couture collections in Paris over the coming week.

"I’m sick of blonde Russian girls," he told AFP. "Clearly the trend now is all for blue-eyed blondes."

And at Jean-Paul Gaultier’s, a designer renowned for using models of all ages, sizes, and origins, one assistant said: "It’s really very difficult at the moment. There are no black models on the market, the agencies have none."

In the last few years, she added, "there’s been an invasion of girls from Eastern Europe, of their type of beauty."

We all know there are black models, so either the agencies aren't sending them or the designers are blaming agencies for the fact that they simply don't want them. Either way, the fashion industry won't change unless it wants to. And it doesn't seem like it's particularly interested. [AFP]

Perhaps it's because all the big-name black models have moved elsewhere since they never got jobs there. There are tons of budding models though to pick from. You can't walk a mile in Paris without seeing a model-esque black woman.

I can't walk to lunch here in NY without seeing black models–just yesterday I saw three all toting their portfolios. They might need to start outsourcing. By the way, has anyone picked up Vogue Italia yet?

@LP: I went to the two magazine stores here. They said it should have come in last week but it's late.

Hmmph.

If those are the models, I have to at least give them credit for hiring models who don't look like they're about to die of starvation.

Is that Karolina Kurkova (3rd one)?? She walked for Brazil's fashion week and was deemed way too fat to be on the catwalk by fashion critics and the media.

Yeah Daria, that's what Universal News in NY told me last Thursday–that it'd be in Friday. Hmmph!

Vogue Italia is supposed to be stateside this Thursday.

I don't know which photo was photoshopped but Karolina was a bit out of shape for Brazil's fashion week. There were some rolls as she turned. Not fat by public standards, but it did stand out on the runway.

I guess we'll have to take it back to Black models working for Black agencies that provide models for Black designers, since no one can be trusted to tell the truth. There are few major agencies that don't have any Black models.

They really don't and the ones that do don't send them out as much.

" “Clearly the trend now is all for blue-eyed blondes.”

Hasn't it always been?? Booo!!

Yeah Right! Them saying there aren't any black models is complete BS. Like Loudmouth Protestant said you can't step out of the subway without seeing one.
I went to one of the biggest Barnes & Noble in NJ and the lady at customer service (african-american lady) automatically knew what I was talking about and didn't even have to look in the computer to tell me they didn't get it yet. She said she's even waiting for it.

There are actually several all-black agencies in Paris.

Oluchi Onweagba has a modeling agency with all black, mostly African models and I think they do work internationally.

DFP, I raise you Scarlett Johansson. And what everyone else said — excuses, excuses, excuses. Now, at least, people are asking "why" more frequently and adamantly, but that, too, may pass. It's a vicious cycle. If there aren't any black models at the agencies, could it possibly be because of a chronic lack of demand from designers? Perish the thought!

Be realistic/logical here people, if you check out th agencies roster you'll notice there are only a handful of ethnic models, therefore how can those handful of models walk for all the numerous designers that make-up paris fashion week. No matter how you look at it there won't be enough ethnic faces considering the sheer number of designers vrs. the handful of ehtnic models available

Someone's lying! I watch Janice Dickensen's show and when I client wants a certain type of "look" she doesn't currently have, she immediately has a casting call.

And atelierboz–do you know how many really popular white models are double-booked every season? They're literally tearing their last look off to run to their next runway show during Fashion week.

Perhaps it's because black women are inherently less attractive than white women? Who'd have thought it!

I mean, I just can't imagine why millions of non-white savages are flooding into white Europe right now… It's not as if most of them are sick rapists looking for white women, no sirree…
