JD, I think Janet's Ready For You To Take Her Back To The Hotel

partingshots910.jpg
• What's the hand doing, Janet? [MG]

• African American is a perfectly nice thing to be, in my opinion, but Beyonce (who shouts her Creole heritage from the damn mountaintops at every opportunity) kind of wishes she had been born a Latina. Maybe in the next lifetime, chica. [Latina]

• Can a black women's magazine besides Essence get a foothold in the market, please? [Jezebel]

• Jamaica's not the most gay-friendly country? I never would have known… [QT]

• Thanks to everyone who came to Full Throttle Fashion on Saturday to celebrate The Fashion Bomb's anniversary with yours truly, The B-Life, Hourglass Events, Pieces Boutique, and the JI Group (phew). Plus, a special thanks to Boutique Finesse and the Rum Cake Fairy (for the insanely delicious and much-needed late-night dessert)!

Bey needs to not talk…ever. This is what you get when you are coddled and protected from even the slightest reality. Sometimes she can put a sentence together and then other times she gives Miss Teen South Carolina a run for her money. I don't think anyone really believes that she wants to be Latina, but she's just a mess when she speaks. If her, mama and 'em was all that Creole -they wouldn't need all that fake hair. As someone who usually backs my fellow Creole girls -I think talking about it like that is uppity and suspect…meaning she probably isn't as Creole as she tries to say. And, like me, she's only half so she really needs to pipe down about it. She's just living up to that Creole stereotype - again…suspect. She gets a big BOO from me for sounding silly in the interview. Read a book, sweetheart, please.

Since I have a Creole mom, it annoys me too. There's a fine line between celebrating your heritage and name-dropping it at every opportunity — and you know I love Beyonce!

Now I feel bad that I said something against the great Goddess. I must say something nice:

Her lacefront wasn't all that bad last night at the awards.

PS…I wasn't hungry until I clicked on the Rum Cake Fairy link. Now my stomach is rumbling. Damn!

What does creole even mean any more?
Beyonce is a idiot whenever she opens her mouth for anything other than singing, so i'm not surprised by her ill thought comments.

That is probably the best way to explain it. And if that's the case, then I'm half Creole because my father is from New Orleans.

I guess Beyonce considers herself creole because she has lighter skin and "good hair", but whatever…

"Tina is of French, Native American, Spanish, Jewish, African American, Chinese, Indonesian, and Creole ancestry."

The girl has been famous for long enough not to have these foot-in-mouth moments.

If you guys only knew how big of Beyonce fan I am, then you would know how much that qoute pains me to read…I just have to think that it was a misquote…that something was left out… not because I think wanting to be Latina in some way separates you from the possiblity of being black (b/c it doesn't) but the fact that less informed people will interpret it that way…

I admit and she even admits she's not the best with public speaking or giving interviews but this foot in mouth is just completely ignorant…she is well aware of how anything she says is scrutinized hence the reason she carries tape recorders to interview so to say something like that…ugh…

but Matthew is in the process of making a huge push with the latin community…even creating a latina version of destiny's child(actually giving them the same name in espanol)…I kid you not…he talked about it in a local houston magazine called 002…

I'm just not for the kissing of ass, pimping and or exploiting a race just to make a profit…it never bothered me about the Creole thing b/c Tina has always talked about that since day one…it does come off as insincere with Beyonce b/c I doubt she knows anything about the actual creole heritage but I still enjoyed the shine she was giving Louisiana creoles

uhhh… my mom is full blooded creole but you hardly ever hear me walking around trying to act as if I'm better than someone. I mean what is creole?… its not like when I go to take the ACT its gonna say: African American
Hispanic
White
Native American
Creole

Creole people need to stop it with that mess

plus I'm with bmd, if they are so creole then why do they need all that damn weave and lacefront?

At least my momma and her people have "good hair".

I guess they need all those weaves and lacefronts the same way gwen stefani, alicia keys, christinia milian, rosario dawson and host of others with that "good hair" need them…

sorry but the word good and hair combined when referencing black women make me see fire…

I see your point honee regarding the hair. With black (esp. black American) women, it's deeper. Africans throw that term around and it's just not that deep. I have thick, kinky hair that breaks the comb. My mom has less kinky hair that's fine. Both fall into the category of "bad." American women seem to have a stronger connection to hair in general. It baffles me that my friends spend hundreds of dollars on a dye and cut that I don't even notice. Maybe if I invested time and money, mine wouldn't be such a mess.

The Knowles' are the modern day Jackson's. Both on some level gravitated towards all things Eurocentric. Let's see. Nose jobs? Check. Hair changes? Check. Guess Bey will be flashing a pierced nip and fondle a little girl in 20 or so years.

I don't see Bey and them having any real connection with their heritage, but I'm ok with that as long as they stop "marketing" it. And it's about more than good hair, etc. It's about knowing who you are and where you came from and adhering to the history and culture of your people. The word "creole" means a lot of things to different ppl - especially us black folks, but there are many, many (millions?) of people who know the real deal. They know that their particular heritage is unique and they celebrate that, BUT not at the detriment of other people and they don't use that heritage as a buffer against being black. That side of my family, the Dechanet-Desassarts, knows their lineage down to quadroons and octoroons and they speak patois. They know which branches of the family came from a free person of color and those who came slaves. They know the man they got their name(s) from and where he came from. They have been in the gulf coast for 100's of years and can damn near tell you exactly when. They are very active in that society. So for me the word "creole" isn't some nebulous, often misunderstood racial term. Nor is it a word that I would use to explain my skin color or hair or any superficial thing like that. For me the word "creole" means life, history and bond.
