Yes, Nigger!

sadnas.jpg
• So much better! It turns out (surprise) Fox News had it wrong. Nas does have an album coming out, on December 11, and it will be called Nigger, not Nigga. He's "taking back the word," which is what they all say. Uh, yay? [MTV]

• Ah. The classic, "faulty thyroid" defense. [E!]

• Yung Joc better watch his back. And get rid of his guns. [SOHH]

• Last Facebook post of the day. Promise. [Jossip]

• Can Leona Lewis cross over to American audiences? You be the judge. [CL]

I understand what Nas is doing and the larger issue he is addressing (I hope!), but there is going to be so much negativity surrounding this by people who don't have the capacity to see it as a social commentary or those who just plain disagree, that I don't see how it can accomplish anything.

For him to title it "Nigger" every song must address the history and legacy that word has had on our people in some way. I don't want anything that could be played in a club or anything that even remotely makes me want to bootyshake. If he wants to reclaim that word then he has to come correct. I love Nas, but I don't know if he can do it. It would be great if he could experiment with different musical forms - jazz or blues - and not have it all be hardcore. You know, do something totally different than what people (Fox) are expecting a "nigger" to do.

You a street disciple and you want people to stay out ya'll business…what…then fine stay getting shot up and beat by the police and not doing shit about it but reacting after shit happen…

Nas is so predictable, and as typical for rappers, ignorant. The word nigger can't be 'taken back'. It is what it is. But ignorant buyers of Nas' crap are probably the same niggers who don't mind getting shot up, stolen from, and disrespected globally, just so this bastard can make some money. I don't get it. But I'm certain there will be a whole coffle (as in group of slaves) of 'niggers' ready to punce.

I think he has a good point with this comment however:

“If Cornell West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he’s got something intellectual to say,” Nas stated. “To think I’m gonna say something that’s not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary.”

Obviously Cornell has credibility that Nas will never have, but he does make a good argument for at least listening to what his album is about.

In all fairness, there's a book titled "Nigger." I really understand certain groups trying to reclaim words, but when has that really worked? Gay people do it with fag. Mexicans do it with wetback. Black people with nigger/nigga. It doesn't work. Why? Because when anyone who isn't authorized to use it does, there's a controversy. Obviously, they are toxic and you can never take all the venom out of it. His intentions may be good, but will it work? No.

But isn't that just talking in circles…he's taking back the word but did we ever own it and the street disciples claim the word has no power…so why should he care if Jesse calls him a nigger… I thought they were proud niggers and niggas… is he acknowledging that the word has a meaning that offends …

Again, Nas and his crew need to get on some real talk and stop being so concerned about their pockets and how they will decrease because they can't find better things to express or a more imaginative way to express it

Wait…I just remembered something. Didn't ODB have an album called "Nigga, Please"? I don't recall anybody writing a book about that! LOL.

…and Tupac had an album called N.I.G.G.E.R and NWA had a (CLASSIC!!!) called Niggaz for Life I think, too.

Just a little bit o' devil's advocate. ;-)

he can call it whatever he wants. I've never bought a Nas record in the past, and don't see that changing in the future.
