
Bar Rafaeli, an Israeli model best known for being Leonardo DiCaprio's Gisele Bundchen replacement, appears in ads for Israeli clothing company, Irit, looking like a queen..or at least a plantation mistress. This would have been a semi-interesting ad campaign in reverse. Actually, not even then. Back to the drawing board, Irit.

This kind of imagery is as old as photography, though it never ceases to shock me. The more common and insidious permutation of it is when people of color are just exotic backdrops, as in the new Free People catalog (http://blog.freepeople.com/2007/04/catalog_stories.html) and the May '07 (page 4) Anthropologie catalog. I like both of those stores, and Free People strives to be progressive (and indeed defended the image at the link above), but it's samo, samo bullshit.
