I don't think race plays any part, but I hesitate in voting for Obama becuz he is black and others think race is a factor. At the moment, none of the candidates have really captured me, but if Obama wins this election, he will not only be representing the nation, but also every person of color. The next president is going to be facing A LOT more difficult challenges than the previous ones (cleaning up Bush's mess). With the war, global warming, the economy, etc, all taking place, he'll really be facing a lot of pressure. I'm just worried if he doesn't meet expectations, the "black part" of him will be blamed.
Ike - Of course if he does poorly it will be b/c he's black. That's how it's going to get played. Just like if Hillary won and did poorly it would be b/c she is a woman. Bush fucks up and it's b/c being president is "hard work" not b/c of the truth…that he's a stupid, redneck cocksucker.
Its a hard race to vote in. Even if he wins, he'll be under intense pressure to assuage the latinos and asians, too, so he cannot always make decisions that will make blacks happy. He's a person of color, so he's under pressure to represent everyone fairly. The white population will be quick to remind him of his mother and beg for their agendas to be heard. I still don't know who I am going to vote for. hairsmystory.com
Well stated, BMD– the "stupid redneck cocksucker" part.
And btw, I was honest– I am more inclined to vote for Obama because he's black, and I know that if he should be elected, that the pile-on will be hellacious. I also believe he is equal to it. If I didn't, he wouldn't get my vote.
I would also like to vote for a woman, but I am genuinely mystified by Hillary's candidacy. I do not like her, and I know many people despise her. She is the epitome of the entitled white woman to me– not the capable white woman, nor the one with the experience to get the job done.
And now, of course, I'm pretty sure she crumples under pressure.
Did anyone see the TODAY Show this morning with some guest person from the Philadelphia Enquirer that when asked to explain why the prelim polls show Barack ahead and then they are wrong come the really voting said that people do not want to go against Barack in public because it's not "PC" to do so (in other words, perceived racist) but behind the voting curtain they will choose who they really want. What do you all think about that?
KatDat - I work with a white woman at Planned Parenthood who is also a fervent supporter and campaign volunteer of Barack (she's also a CA delegate). She and I have talked about this and she says that's her worst fear. She was also high up in Howard Dean's campaign so she knows her stuff. So I'd say the reality of that is very, very real for Barack, but what can you do? If people are disingenuous about who they will support, you can't control that. It's sad, but true.
Interesting results. Personally, race has nothing to do with my choice.
Yea, looks like people are being pretty honest.

I agree that it is a sad reality. I'm speechless…
