A representative of the British National Party — a whites only, anti-Islam, anti-gay nationalistic political party — has won a seat in the London Assembly after receiving more than 5 percent of the constituency's vote. It's the first London Assembly seat ever won by a BNP representative.
Richard Barnbrook, the BNP member elected, immediately set the tone for his time in office in a press conference in which he railed against Muslim immigrants and gays: "You may have your religion behind your closed doors, but you don't bring it onto the streets. … You can be gay behind closed doors … but you don't bring it onto the streets, demanding more rights for it."
What is Europe coming to. First the former nazi party member becomes governor again in Rome and now this guy. Black in Europe need to keep a bag by the door, just in case they need to leave in a hurry.
@ Chic Noir–sad to say, but I agree. SMH
Cruel Secretary we have some black European readers who visit this site, and I think one of them mentioned how unsafe he/she feels in Europe sometimes. I hope a few of them post a comment.
No f–king surprise there. I was born in northern England– BNP was pretty popular back in the early 80s.
@ Chic Noir:
yes, you are correct– many Blacks, South Asians, Middle Easterns, and Africans often feel unsafe in Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Europeans can be brutally racist than (white) Americans.
*can be more racist, I mean.
Take a look at the US Congress.
daria can you explain your comment.
Exactly Daria. People vote republican, who are just undercover racists. It is one seat, %5 percent of the vote, how can that represent an entire country and continent?
I lived in England for over 10 years, I never felt any kind of racism or conscious of race until I came to the US.
There is an entire website dedicated to anti-gay politicians
In addition to the policies already in place banning or severely limiting travel into the country by men from Muslim countries, there is also that anti-Mexican sentiment
Why is this different? Cuz they are a party of their own? Well, we're stuck with the 2 party system and people with these views are in both.
Republicans don't have a monopoly on bigotry. I at least respect the fact that most of them admit to a certain level of bigotry, something you'll never hear from a Dem.
I dated a Republican. His family is wealthy. He's voting self-interest and damning everything else. I may not like it but I respect it because if I cared about random ass taxes that I don't even understand due to the lack of a trust fund or inheritance, it may just impact my political leanings. I can't stand the paternalistic, noblesse oblige attitude from many heterosexual WASP Dems.
V for Vendetta much?
@M: "I lived in England for over 10 years, I never felt any kind of racism or conscious of race until I came to the US."
Um, did you live in some magical city in England where everybody was friendly Cos British people can be just as horribly racist as Americans, from personal experience, and from what I've heard from many other non-white British minorities.
No I didn't Bored Kidz. Surprise, surprise not all white people are racist.
Hearing about Britain always makes me glad to be in America.
Sorry *M*, but your claim that you never experienced racism in the UK or was concious of race in in the UK, is the most full of shit statement I think i've ever read here. You either lived under a rock the entire time, or are incredibly blind.
I lived in London for 2 years, and I could write a think book.
wow, so my life experience is full of shit, Ya beacuse you lived my life. How dare you.
I'm english and have lived here (north-east) for a few years now. I'm mixed race and i've never experienced any rascism towards me outright, but people have told me about others being racist and i have been present when some people have been being racist about people from minority groups.
One of the people i live with has very little time for anyone who isn't white english. Which always makes me wonder why he makes the effort to talk to me.
I've never felt unsafe because i was scared i'd singled out for being a different colour.
I think it's sad that people want to vote for the BNP and sick that they got enough votes to gain a seat. =[ These are the people that need to be educated, instead of being scared into believing that 'immigrants' are stealing the jobs that they're too lazy to do.
(Sorry if this makes no sense. I tend to ramble.)
I'm born and raised in London and have never had any major problems. That's not to say I haven't experienced any racism or encountered any ignorance - some people still use the word 'coloured'! - but I know it could be a whole lot worse, and of course has been for plenty of people (Stephen Lawrence was murdered by racist thugs in south-east London). And with the BNP's small victory, I fear this will escalate.
I remember, years ago, when they used to go on and on about 'reparations': sending non-British, non-white people home. There was a black guy who said, 'OK then, the BNP get my vote if they pay for my air fare back to the Caribbean, like they say they will.' He's still waiting for that plane ticket…
I am Canadian but lived in Britain during the Brixton Riots. There is indeed racism, especially against South Asian people, but it isn't the scorching sort you find in the U.S.
There is a despair/poverty in the U.S that is palpable.
5% of the London vote? I'll take those odds anytime instead of the present US government.
