The television movie based on Lorraine Hansberry’s play,
A Raisin in the Sun, attracted
12 million viewers when it aired on ABC Monday, giving the network its best Monday numbers since November. The Kenny Leon-directed telefilm was the first of its kind to screen at the Sundance Film Festival, and starred, as I’m sure you are more than aware, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald, Sanaa Lathan, and Mr. Sean “Diddy” Combs. I confess it’s on my DVR, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. If you saw it, what did you think?
I thought Puffy or Sean Combs or whatever he wants to call him self had too big shoes to fill in. It wasn’t right for him to be surrounded by such great/fantastic actresses who have years of experience in acting, to be in the same movie as him. Phylicia Rashad was amaizing as well as Sanna Lathan and Audra McDonald.Phylicia should definetly be nominated for an Emmy for this peformance.
“I confess it’s on my DVR, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.”
Ha! Same here. I was going to watch it last night but I passed on it in order to watch The Biggest Loser. I guess I’ll watch it sometime this weekend.
I agree with Ashley-Nicole, I thought Diddy tried but could not do justice to the role or the other actors. His eyes were just too dead. I dont know maybe I just had Sidney Poitier in my head and couldn’t get into Diddy’s interpretation of the role.Phylicia Rashad really should get an award.
I missed it! Damn.
It was good. You will enjoy it. But I have to say, Diddy just can’t act. It was a bit of a hitch in the production. I saw it on the wide screen and everytime he entered the picture, you just kept wishing Phylicia and Audra had someone to play against. Also, that role needs to be occupied by someone who is sexy and smolders. Diddy is just not sexy. He’s a bit “goofy.” You have to believe the tender make-up scenes with Audra, and I didn’t. I believed that no matter what, Ruby Dee would undress for Sidney — no matter how hair-brained his schemes or insufferable he was. Diddy just doesn’t have that. Imagine that role played by Idris Elba. I thought Idris was a perfect fit. But I appreciate Diddy doing what he has done to bring this play to life — once again. But he is just not on the level of talent of in this picture. Sorry.
I enjoyed the broadcast and thought the cast did an excellent job. Phylicia Rashad definitely deserves an award- she killed it. I also think that Diddy did a great job. He is not Sidney Poitier and never will be. It is unfair for him to be compared with an icon such as Poitier. I have also heard a lot of folks talk smack about how they did not watch because they cannot statnd Diddy… This is A Raisin in the Sun, not Making of the Band! If his name was Random Guy, I think he would’ve gotten more positive feedback for his performance.
You’re right Neenee — Diddy really did try, and that’s all you can ask. Unfortunately, you could see him trying.
I have to say that although I could not stand the thought of Diddy in the role, he did way better than I expected. Not saying he deserves an Emmy or anything (because he certainly doesn’t), but he held his own better than I anticipated. I actually managed to forget that he was “Diddy” for the majority of the production. And I have to add that watching him in the role with an awareness of his own brand of bootstrapping was a unique experience. The role of Walter Younger is an interesting one for a man like Diddy, who granted, had all the advantages of being born in a post-civil rights era…but there’s also the issue of Diddy having that same animal hunger as his character for a better life, but actually channeling it into mind-blowing success, while Walter consistently falls short of the mark. Watching the production with that knowledge, was, in and of itself, very interesting. However, as for the longtime (and seasoned) actors, they were amazing. I’ll be beyond pissed if Phylicia Rashad doesn’t get at the very least a nomination for this role..she was absolutely breathtaking in this role. Overall, they put something of a fresh spin on the play and I enjoyed it. Sanaa was great, as we all expect her to be, and Audra McDonald was as well…but Phylicia was the only true revelation.
Why, yes! I would have LOVED Random Guy, the trained and/or talented actor. But Diddy? No.
Diddy don’t really know “the Struggle” therfore, he was unable to connect with the role. He’s a millionaire! What do he really have in common with us regular folk?
To #10. Diddy was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His struggle to acheive his millions is well documented. Educate yourself!
The movie reminded me where I was the first time I saw the movie on tv years ago…
Ecellent, and still relevant!
Diddy wasn’t born a millionaire… but maybe he’s been one for so long that he’s forgotten what it’s like to be “regular”? I didn’t get to watch it on Monday, so I can’t comment on who did what best…
Frauleota - jinx?
I really liked it. It surprised me too because I’m usually very critical of re-makes but to me it was very well done. Phylicia Rashad was the star talent wise and I actually think Diddy did well. I know he has felt like Walter Lee in the past before his luxurious life that he leads today. I commend him for this!
The movie was really really good. Phylicia played the hell out of that role. Diddy was ok but there were scenes where he just came off flat.
Puffy was a wet rag. BOO PUFFY. I think casting himself in a role he was definitely unqualified for just refinforced that he is the delusional narcicist that we all know him to be. He was just terrible. But I have never seen such great female performances!
