Regulators: France Continuing To Add To Its Internet Block List

computer.jpgLast month, French politicians introduced legislation that would ban pro-anorexia content from the Internet. There was much buzz about this due to the nebulous definition of "pro-anorexia" material. Now they're expanding their censorship sights — child pornography (blocked from the 'net in several countries, and Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable agreed yesterday to a similar ban in New York ) and "content linked to" terrorism, and racism will all be blocked in France. The blacklist will be compiled based on sites flagged by Internet users. It seems hardly foolproof, particularly the racism and terrorism thing. I mean, here in the states, certain people would have marked a simple dap between husband and wife terrorism. And others, in turn, would have flagged that reaction as racism. Murky waters! [AP]

Murky indeed even if not done yet. No first amendment here.

The worst part being : "The blacklist will be compiled based on sites flagged by Internet users"

Remember the good time when people would inform the Gestapo that their neighbour was hiding jewish people because it was the right thing to do ?

Count till 5 and witness the rebirth of fascism in Europe.

American search engines already censor these sites. The self-esteem brigade, the women who attack Vogue for using anorexic models that somehow harm their YM-reading daughters (then go home and continue on the Master Cleanser to drop 15 lbs in 5 days right in front of their daughters) is responsible for this. Does it matter if it's the government that's doing the censorship?

And people think of Freedom of Speech being denied/blocked only in Muslim countries and China.

@Daria and Chic Noir : yes it does matter. Censorship should not be in the hand of a member of the government, it should be in the hand of a judge or a member of the judicial system who could deliver a quick yet motivated order to shut down a website.

Political power deciding on it's own who should or shouldn't be found on the internet is simply dangerous.

Here in France, Some magazines are starting to ask themselves if the majority of the media area is not under the control of the President via a small group of "friends".

The main word here is Control.
