Rev. Wright Speaks — And It's Not About Hating America!

wrightobama.jpgIt makes perfect sense that a guy like Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who has been, at best, mischaracterized in the media, to want to defend himself. I would definitely want to. But here's a selfish thought: couldn't the good reverend had waited until, say, after election day to go on the air? Wright spoke to Bill Moyers about the controversy surrounding his "God Damn America" sermon in an interview that will air today on PBS. He said that he is a pastor and Barack Obama is a politician, and that you cant compare the two. He also said his words were twisted in order to further an anti-Obama cause.

"They know nothing about the church. They know nothing about our prison ministry. They know nothing about our food ministry. They know nothing about our senior citizens home. They know nothing about all we try to do as a church and have tried to do." Focusing only on the snippets, he said, "was unfair. I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I felt for those who were doing that, were doing it for some very devious reasons."

True, Rev. Wright. But since people have already more than made up their minds about this, all this interview is going to do is remind people of the scandal's existence. Oh, well. [WP]

I was thinking the same thing. Wright could have held his tongue until after the election but here we go again with the Wright issue. I do find it interesting how it finally stop being the number one topic and here he goes. I understand he wants to defend himself but damn not wright now.

I'm with you Lauren. When I heard about this, all I could think was "Shut up and go away". And now more reason for Fox news to have their Wright coverage on an endless loop.

Rev. Wright has the right to defend himself, but ultimately, he should have stayed quiet.

I don't understand all this uproar. After all, I thought that Americans have the right to freedom of speech and expression?

I guess not unless you're a friendly Uncle Tom in favor of George W. Bush, the Republican policy, and will say anything to please the white dominated, right-wing dominated U.S media.

awww, geez, there goes our freedom of speech!

He needs to realize that far too many people on the left are anti-religion and the only people listening are those who share his views.

people trippin like everybody must luv this country or you can't love the country and not criticize it.
what did Wright say that wasn't true…
he is not a hate monger…
he is a great man…
to judge him by sound bites is wrong and typical..funny how they show the same sound bites over and over again..

and to people saying Wright should fall back—that is easy for you to say when you arent't the ones getting threats.

nobody knows about Hate more than AMERIKKA. the sad part is most people of color jump on the band wagon and side with a media that doesn't give a damn about your black asses…and you don't even realize it.
this man has done so much for people and to see what is being done to him makes me ill…

While I initally cringed to see Rev. Wright speaking publicly just before a close primary (IN), the responses to the interview at pbs.org have really been overwhelmingly supportive.

@daria - I have to say I don't agree with you about the 'left being anti-religion'. Feeding the poor, equality for all, safe harbor for the persecuted, 'whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me' — all very leftist, Democratic and very Christ-like ideals.

For far too long we have let the right wave the flag and cross together as if they owned them both. That doesn't mean they do.

Let's look at this another way.

The liberal, educated White Americans that were either on the fence about Obama or even in his camp, watch PBS. Also, conservative, educated White people watch PBS. For a small minority of people, it is an intellectually elite media outlet.

Given that, then it stands to reason that he didn't really remind most Americans about the controversy, but rather, had a conversation with the two groups of people that could be an important voting block for Obama in the remaining primaries.

At best, Wright is a stranger to the truth. Just as it is troubling that conservatism has become a Satanic cult bent on practicing ritual human sacrifice and dismemberment in Iraq for the next 100 years, so too is it disturbing that a cult on the left thinks they can curse America and lie about it or that we are to supposed to admire them for the way they curse us. Well in that case, dm U too! And in the words of FUtus, the sitting VP, fu as well.

Last night I watched Bill Moyers interview the Rev. and I'll say it was a great interview. If I were a religious person I'd want to go to this guy's church.

The Bill Moyers interview was very good and the NAACP speech was very enlightening for the entire press and nation to get a glimpse into who Rev. Wright is; HOWEVER, the commentary and Q&A at the National Press Club breakfast was a TRAIN WRECK! I was shaking my head the entire time wanting him to shut it down. Rev. Wright may not be a politician but he is aware that while the truth may set you free that he HAS to be artful when speaking and he was not that at NPC breakfast. I am very sad as an Obama supporter today. While I feel that someone's pastor should not matter in a presidential election…the FACT remains that it does and there are some nuances that one must accept in life whether you agree with them or not!

Yeah, Yolanda. I was good until that press thing. I was like Yo, you look like a coon, giving the White man exactly what he wants to take a brother man down. Damn, y'all, damn, damn, damn!

Ok so Rev. Wright can't keep his mouth shut big deal. However, it continues to amaze me how instead of being judged for his entire message, his entire ministry he's being judged for excerpts from his sermons that were obviously packaged by people with an agenda to discredit Obama. And now instead of sticking together on this issue we Brown Folk are acting like crabs in a barrel. The whole point of this debacle was to distract the American people from dealing just with the issues in this election and it is a success as of right now. Because as people are arguing about this Hilary Clinton is stuffing her pockets with contributions and lubing up to screw over the American people when the right time comes. And everyone that is complaining here better be registered to vote.
