Sure you can buy a message tee with these lyrics on it at Urban Outfitters or Delia’s, but it’s so much more entertaining when Me’shell NdegeOcello says it.
Oops, daria, reverse that: even Ndegeocello is very out (I remember her stating she was a lesbian in Essence when she first started), but I heard that Rebecca Walker was mom to Ndegeocello’s child, not the other way around. They’ve since broken up, and Walker has a son with her fella…I think Walker wrote a book about her experiences being a second mom and a biological first mom and writes about her journey through motherhood on The Root.
well, i’m her stan, so i kind of know all her business…she and rebecca walker are bi-sexual, and ended up in a long term relationship, with rebecca helping to raise meshell’s son solomon. they broke up and rebecca got together with a man and had a baby, tenzin. i don’t know who or if meshell is with now, or if it is a man or a woman, but i can say with certainty she’s not a lesbian, thus her ability to sing this song with a straight face.
@ sloane–well, gay people, inside and outside of entertainment, have had to pretend they were straight with very, very straight faces for a very long time–least they faced some nasty, nasty repercussions from employers, family, strangers, and friends. And there are women who identify as lesbians who sleep with men (whether or not *we* feel that way isn’t the point–that’s how they identify). And creative folks are creative folks: they can take on various viewpoints for artistic and/or political reasons. (She may very well have liked the song, regardless of her orientation.) So Me’Shell singing a song about a “straight” relationship, by virtue of having a straight face in a video, equals to her being bi, IMO.
Not to challenge your stan-hood (and I mean that sincerely), but has Me’Shell later identified herself as bi? (I read that Essence blurb back in the early 90s…)
oops! I meant to say “So, Me’Shell singing a song about a “straight” relationship, by virtue of having a straight face in a video, does *not* equal to her being bi, IMO.
@ Rachel–you’re right: gay people *still* have to pretend to be straight for safety’s and security’s sake. Damn.
I read an itnerview years ago where Michelle said she like both. I wonder what Daria, ottoermatic and The Cruel Secretary think about Snoop from The Wire if you like Michelle.
actually she has identified as bi in quite a few articles, and it’s been quite controversial that she wouldn’t ally herself, so to speak, with one side or another. you can check it out on her fan website, freemyheart.com.
you also don’t have to explain to me about lesbians and gay men pretending to be straight for the sake of keeping their livelihood or about women who sleep with men and continue to identify as lesbians for personal or political reasons, because I AM a lesbian and i honestly have personal knowledge of both situations. the issue i have with people automatically assuming that meshell is a lesbian, is that they generally do so based on her somewhat androgynous appearance or her past relationships with or songs about women, but the fact remains that she identifies as bi. i think it’s problematic to assume anything about anybody’s sexual orientation.
and she did say something in an article about many of the songs from some of her albums being about men simply because she HAD BEEN INVOLVED with men, and it behooved her imbue music with emotions she had from these experiences. the type of artist meshell is, i believe if she were truly a lesbian, she would not have been able to sing that song with a straight face…she’s always about being forthcoming and honest, with a bit of wit. ellen looked faked playing straight, and so does the da brat and queen latifah to me; not meshell.
@ sloane–ummm…hmmm…as I said to you, I wasn’t challenging your stan-hood or your knowledge about Hollywood in and out of the closet or your personal experience as a lesbian. I apologize that I caused any upset.
The information I remember about Me’Shell came out of her own mouth back in the 90s, not out of judging her based on her androgynous appearance or past relationships with women. As I said before, if that’s how she self-identified, then I have to go by what *she* said. That, to me, is just basic respect. Now, if Me’Shell *herself* has since said, “hey, I’ve rethought how I define my sexual orientation, and I’m bi, y’all,” then I respect her words about that as well. Which is why I said, “whether or not *we* feel that way isn’t the point–that’s how they identify.” And why am I not surprise that folks got their undies in a bunch over Me’Shell declaring herself bi? Bisexual people just seem to bring out the nervous dichotomy in folks to this day…and/or, if they’re women, the porn fantasies. ::Eye roll::
As for da brat and queen latifah…I can’t be so bold as to declare their sexual orientation for them. Until they themselves get on Oprah or some other forum and say, “Yes, y’all, I’m not straight,” I have to respect what they’ve said about themselves. IMO, I have no choice.
I’m waiting for sloane’s answer, too, but let me see if I can take a stab at it, Chic Noir: I reading an article a loooong time ago (like the late 80s-early 90s) in an LGBITQ publication by an out and proud lesbian who occasionaly had sex with men. The writer refused to call herself bisexual; she felt the word “lesbian” best described her pro-woman politics and woman-attraction. But she also enjoyed sleeping with men. Period.
I swear, Chic Noir, for the next three or four issues (yes, *issues*) the “Letters” section was an all-out war over the writer’s sexual orientation and politics and feminism and whether or not she was going through a phase…friend, folks were hot and it was a *mess.* But again, that was the late 80s and early 90s–the idea of “gender and sexual fluidity” didn’t quite reach critical mass yet. People lived it, of course, but it wasn’t a “discourse” that it’s becoming now. If that makes sense…
lol - I prefer her to be with women b/c the CD Comfort Woman was heaven sent…and I’m pretty sure it’s when she was willy nilly about Rebecca Walker. I only wish men knew how to make such sensual sexy songs that didn’t leave a woman feeling like a piece of steak.
i want to be gay bad…
i want to be gay bad. hell, i lay in bed with two vanilla striped women already. and i’m thinking it wouldn’t be so bad. i’m a female and have short hair that i’m going to grow out so i can emerge into a lipstick lesbian. with of course, meshell being a lesbian influence on me as well as kd lang. of course, i have to give props to ani difranco too. if you have any social accepting advice to give me on this gay thang…holla …ghettiegirl@live.com
How can one says “I want to be gay bad”?
I guess - you are or you are not - it’s not so rational thang…
Such kinda thangs get you even if don’t want to…
There’s no “I want to be” - “I don’t want to be”.
…and sooooo much hotter! Full disclosure–I have a serious girl-crush on Me’Shell Ndegeocello. *blush*
How could you not???
Well, I’m fairly sure she’s a lesbian and baby mama to Alice Walker’s daughter. You can totally holla
Oops, daria, reverse that: even Ndegeocello is very out (I remember her stating she was a lesbian in Essence when she first started), but I heard that Rebecca Walker was mom to Ndegeocello’s child, not the other way around. Damn, do I know too much about this or what?
meshell ndegecello= hot

i mean meshell ndegeocello = hot
I prefer bisexual women

LMAO @ n°3 by Daria !!! That’s exactly what i thought : she sings boyfriend but that should be girlfriend !
@ The Cruel Secretary : that’s so true. Unfortunatly gays have (still have sometimes !) to pretend being straight… and that’s a shame.
Yet this song is not approved by my little Disney-educated heart. I’m rushing out to listen to Steven Tyler’s sexy mouth nearly swallowing the mic singing “I don’t wanna miss a thing” on Youtube. I like it more when people fake being totally in love paradise… that’s why i love BeyoncĂ© (just kidding).

Dang it! I meant to say, “*Some* gay people still have to pretend to be straight for safety’s and security’s sake.”

@ Chic Noir–Snoop from The Wire? Meh.
^^^

sloane, can you please give more info on lesbians who sleep with men.

Thanks cruel Secretary- I find it funny how worked up people become over what someone else does in their own bedroom.
