Awwww…. Remember when Lauryn Hill was Lauryn Hill? I loved her so much in high school that I successfully forged a campaign to get everyone to call me L. Boogie (note: never the cool way to get a nickname) and was pleasantly surprised to see that it stuck. I don't think we'll ever see our old friend in her old form again, so let's thank goodness for CDs and YouTube.
I like the new Lauryn. People change. You wouldn't want to be the same person 5 - 10 years from now. Why put that on her?
Okay. That's fine. I don't like the new Lauryn, and while I reminisce fondly about the Lauryn Hill I did like, I don't believe I said in the post that she doesn't have the right to change or evolve in whatever way she wants. But if you move in a direction that alienates the people who used to buy your albums, you lose fans. That's how it works.
All the pictures I've seen and stories I've read about her recently have said she was a nutcase now…like Amy Winehouse bad. That is not a good change for anyone.
I also like Lauryn's new stuff (well latest, I should say) It's def. different, but "Just Like the Water" speaks to me in the same way that "The Ex Factor" spoke to me in my Freshman Year. But, I can understand why some people don't feel the same way..the latest stuff isn't a universal and catchy.
I have to admit there have been some crazy pics (that one with the clown make-up on..damn!Q)/stories surrounding her..which are most likely true. But damn, that girl has lived some life in the past 6 years.
And furthermore, perhaps losing a bunch of her fan base played into her behavior (in conjunction with the cheating lying men).
Imagine if you were at the tip top of the game and in your next effort (which you believe is your greatest effort)people where like "Um I like you before..but not now..what happened to you?". I mean look at Britney Spears (sorry to compare ya Lauryn!).
Haha L Boogie - about you and 1 million other people's nick name :). I can imagine "Hey, my name is Lauryn too! Call me L Boogie!). You funny girl!
Lauren you are entitled to your opinion as I am. I don't think she alienates her fans at all. I used to be a big Usher fan. He changed and I don't too care for him now. People evolve.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I responded to clarify my position — I was reminiscing about the good ol' days and missing the old Lauryn Hill, not suggesting that she should have remained this exact same person for 12 years. I don't think anyone would disagree that it is natural to evolve. The way you feel about Usher is the way I feel about her (and also Usher).
Wow, Lauren is a big Lauryn fan cause this has her heated. She wrote two comments on this post.
I still love Lauryn and I am ready for a new album from her.
I'm with you Lauren, I want the old L Boogie back. As for Usher, you can keep him old and new (especially new). There was something always irritating about him to me!!!
*Sheds tears for L Boogs*
I gave up like a 2 years ago. Let it go ya'll . That ship done sailed.
