By special request, this is Al Green performing "Let's Stay Together," a classic of epic proportions played on the radio and at parties with a regularity that would suggest it is a recent release, in December of 1972. He is wearing what can only be described as a truly awful suit.
Hot grits and Jesus were awaiting him in the future, but in 1972 he was still basking in the glow of mega-success without the religious guilt or third degree burns. Enjoy!
Great choice! How's this for a coincidence? I have Al Green's Greatest Hits playing right now.
I was turned off by Al Green years ago when my father made us listen only to Al Green during a car trip that lasted about three hours. It wasn't until I was older that I began to appreciate him (and my dad's taste!).
I-I-I-I I'm so-o in love with grits.
I have fond memeories of waking up on Saturday mornings to the voice of Al Green BLARING from our family room speakers. My mother seemed to get a kick out of blaring Al or Stevie Wonder while I was still sleeping.
Speaking of grits. I had a very good crab and grits dish at one of those upscale soul food places that make shit half as good as your mom, but charge you an arm and a leg. The dish however was really good. I can't imagine having a hot plate of that stuff thrown on me.
