Danny Glover is having difficulty finding funding for his Toussaint Louverture biopic, because financiers are worried about the lack of white heroes… in a movie about the Haitian Revolution. Okay.
'"Producers said 'It's a nice project, a great project… where are the white heroes?'" he told AFP. "I couldn't get the money here, I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn't believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to. The first question you get, is 'Is it a black film?' All of them agree, it's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan."' [AFP]
…You think it's be pretty clear by now. There were no white heroes in Haiti at that time, they were all working their slaves to death all the while calling them niggers in French…I guess to some, that would be a hero, but not to others.
This is sad. I would really want to see this film. I wonder how many Black people actually know about Toussaint though. I didn't know about him until maybe 3 years ago.
This makes me angry. You know what they mean when they say there's no white hero, right? They mean we can't allow for a new interpretation of the black race other than helpless and stupid, and that this representation is one that is refuted by history is unacceptable. They would go so far as to rewrite history to keep up the story. It's like a cycle, producers in the mainstream media won't accept a movie that depicts blacks as anything but criminal because "it won't make enough money", but how is anything supposed to change if we are constantly bombarded with these representations that enforce white supremacy? It has to start somewhere, and maybe if this movie started to tell a different story, other movies could be produced with a similar theme and make just as much money as or more than the ones telling us that Blacks are stupid. I don't believe that the general population is so naturally evil that they wouldn't pay for a movie with anything but a message supporting the supposed inferiority of Blacks. I hate that capitalism is the driving force for this continued white supremacist representation of us, when there are so much more important goals in life than making money.
Matthew. you've read my mind.
Danny doesnt need white money!
Well there are plenty of blks with money who can pull togeather and finance this movie.
The fact that nobody wants to finance it because it lacks white heroes says something very important.
How well did DreamGirls do internatioanlly? Does anyone know?
Oh yea, they said blacks could not sell magazines and look at how well the July Italia Vogue issue has sold. Also check out the Janet Jackson issue of US weekly. We can sell movies too.
cosign mathew
Danny please don't give up.
Bronze Trinity,
Toussaint L'Ouverture is huge in the French-speaking world which is predominantly a black/brown language now (over 50% of the world's speakers are in Africa, 12% in the Caribbean, 7% in Asia/Oceania).
As for the film:
I can think of Napoléon as the main villain.
He did send thousands of Polish troops (then under France's rule) and once in Haiti, about 200 sided with the rebels and became Haitian citizens once the revolution was over (200 white heroes right there
Mattew-
It's not that people would intentionally not go to see the movie because it has no white heroes, it's a subconscious thing.
I think that he should alert black celebrities and other big money makers to the cause and gather money that way. I
I wonder if he could release it as an independent film.
Where's all the rich black folks/celebrities when u need them?
maybe one day, the black powerbrokers will come together ala Dreamworks and pool their resources (not holding my breath though) there already is a black-owned studio complex founded by tim and daphne reid in virginia
Exactly, Ike, JazzyMelanin…
