First Bishop Weeks beats up Juanita Bynum and now this? The black televangelist world took another hit today when the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee announced that he was launching an investigation into six famous televangelist ministries, including the organizations run by Georgia's Bishop Eddie Long and Creflo Dollar.
"I'm following up on complaints from the public and news coverage regarding certain practices at six ministries," Grassley said in a statement. "The allegations involve governing boards that aren't independent and allow generous salaries and housing allowances and amenities such as private jets and Rolls Royces.
"I don't want to conclude that there's a problem, but I have an obligation to donors and the taxpayers to find out more," Grassley said.
I am far, far removed from the world of televangelist ministries, but isn't it always sort of understood that these people are, if not outright frauds, making way, way too much money for their chosen profession and flaunting it unnecessarily? I suppose this is not the majority opinion, since millions of people send them their hard-earned cash, but this certainly seems like a worthy investigation for the government to launch.
I'm Episcopalian. We're not an evangelical people and certainly not this brand of evangelizing.
I always crack up every time I see Creflo A. Dollar's name. LOL His last name is Dollar for goodness sake. LOL
My great-grandmother gave money to Billy Graham, Rev. Price and others until the day she died at the age of 101. I used to believe that these people only prayed (sorry!) on the elderly, but their congregations are full of young people getting fooled, too.
I don't think the gov't needs to get involved. If ppl want to be foolish enough to tithe to a church using the money wrong then that's on them.
i don't believe in the concept of church itself and never believed i needed to go to church to relate to god, so therefore i don't give any money to keep them running. but there are so many stories of people mishandling, misappropriating, and just plain lining their pockets with money meant to be spent towards the upkeep of their church that i don't really mind if a there's a government probe that lights a fire under these peoples asses.
I'm not saved but I enjoy watching sermons by one of the ministers being investigated…Paula White. That little white lady can preach.
That being said, I think a lot of people have the wrong idea about tithing. People who tithe from the heart do it because they are grateful for whatever blessings they receive from the man up stairs. They tithe to thank the lord. If ministers misuse that money, that's their load to bear. They might not be prosecuted, but have you ever met a preacher's kid who was normal.
Why don't you people let God take care of his own business with these ministers? God knows just how to deal with his own, without any meddling from those who know very little about the bible and God's ways.
Not into megachurches, but I have a problem with this. Why is the Senator doing this now? Could it be to deflect attention from the war?hmmm….Most of the pastors on the list have all have had major IRS audits and Eddie Long and ol' Creflo came out clean. So what is the point again? yeah I thought so.
Also, this type of manhandling of the government does not just affect these megachurches it affects ALL churches. Its more of a way to control the church and make it do and say what they want.
