Small Allowances

The Obamas recently "revealed their home life" to People, and they said that their daughters get a $1-a-week allowance. Really? One dollar? They also don't give birthday presents, because the party is the present and their friends also bring gifts. Message: the Obama kids might be ready to move into the White House, but they are no more special than any other kid. Oh, except for the fact that they'll be living in the White House and get interviewed by Maria Menounos. [People]

Damn. A dollar?! They're 10 and 7, no? I go $5 at 10 and that was in the 94. We were expected to give at least $1 to offering at church so technically, it's $4.

WTF?! No birthday presents from the 'rents? I hope her parents are alive. Who will get them the Wii? My mom probably made a 3rd or a 4th of what just he makes in a year and at least I got like an outfit or a camera or something. Rich kids should get at least as much as working class ones.

P.S.: the POINT of an allowance is to get kids to understand money. They can save and work hard for something big they want. They should have a bit of flexibility in that area.

That’s what Suze Orman and Jean Chatzky say

I didn't have allowance until I was 15. And I asked for it and my dad said, No Biggie, you've got it…
I am excellent with money to this day because I had to request it everytime. I had to decide was a new T-shirt worth the lecture about the price of ground beef these days. Nope! Just save the birthday money and summer job salary…
A dollar is enough - they'll learn to make it enough.

I never got an allowance, but why do they even bother giving $1? The b-day gifts thing would be an issue with me. Gotta get presents from Mom and Pops, dude.

Yeah really.

Wasn't Malia's birthday party in frickin North Dakota? Absolutely every 10 year old's top choice. Not. If they're taking them to the American Girl place or something, I can consider calling that a present, especially since it comes with a $150 doll. Boo to this mess. Poor kids.

About the presents, now THAT I must complain about, they don't give presents?? I think that's pretty stingy. But who am I to say anything?

I don't see what the big deal is, my family doesn't really do birthday presents either. For a birthday you get a party and a cake, presents are for Christmas. And I never got allowance.
