• IOC chairman Jacques Rogge told reporters that Jamiacan Usain Bolt did not "spirit of the Olympic ideal" after breaking world records in the 100m and 200m finals. I'm pretty sure Rogge's quote isn't in the spirit of the Olympic ideal, either. Sure they guy is cocky, but he's 22 and the fastest man on earth. Also, it's clear that he's friends with the other runners, so he's obviously not a terrible sport off the track. Meanwhile, the IOC has finally decided to investigate the underage Chinese gymnasts.
• Both the women's and the men's U.S. relay teams were disqualified in the relay semifinals after dropping the baton. No finals for them.
• The American softball team, which was supposed to be invincible, lost the gold to Japan.
Yeah, this is what the head of the IOC should be concerned with. Making sure some 22 year old kid who has just made himself the greatest sprinter of all-time is stoic and respectful, rather than cocky and clearly enjoying himself.
Especially when they're so silent on the human rights abuses of China (two old ladies being sentenced to reeducation labor camps, for instance)….yes, Usain Bolt has damaged the "Olympic ideal" far more than the courteous, gracious Chinese hosts.
F them. He and his Golden shoes broke the world record, I think that embodies enough Olympic Spirit.
The only thing Bolt did wrong was not finishing the 100m run at his fastest speed. The chest beating and screaming didn't bother me; I'd pat my own back too if I accomplished something that big! Sports are supposed to be fun and I give props to Bolt for adding a little fun to the seriousness of those games. The man eats nuggets, puts bunny ears on his competitors/friends and prepares for a race by watching TV. He is definitely sending a good message when it comes to sideline moms and dads, lighten up!
Schanina, couldn't agree more. The kid is having fun, what's wrong with that? It's enough of a pattern for me to observe that people (whites, blacks, whomever) tend to gang up on blacks when they don't show modesty when they are good at something. Even when they're just being happy, as in this case, versus being arrogant.
Heheh, of course IOC finally have to investigate. What other choice do they have when hackers coughed up evidence online?
NBC attacked Bolt too with the same he's not modest enough crapola. I say who cares what NBC and the idiots at the IOC think; what matters is what the people of Jamaica think and they love him.
I agree with Schanina, I think he was just having fun.He just turned 22 today, 22 year old men are really little boys in a mans body.
Although, I would of preferred him to run full out in the 100, instead of showboating, cause I want the best show he can give. One thing is certain, his competitors were not mad about it. It seems as if he is well liked, and believe me, sprinters often beef big time and act like divas. In the 90s, they would sometimes get into fistfights off the track.
Btw, he ran the 200 thru the tape and really kept his composure during the race from start to finish.
Did anyone else giggle or shake their head at the US officals getting the guy from the Netherlands Antilles DQ after the American Sprinter was DQ.
He should shake hands with them after the finish line. However, he is only 21 and he will learn. I have no problems with his showboating (prior to the race) but a shake of the hand or a tap on the shoulder immediately after the race would be a good gesture
I saw him shake hands, and even hug his competitors after the finish.
@Chic Noir
I giggled at the DQ drama too. It took me back to elementary school…lol
@Schanina- the US said, Oh our althlete is out well guess what, so is >>that guy too.
JR needs to sit the f down because I'm sure trying to let cheaters slide goes against the Olympic spirit as well. They tried and tried to kill this cheating scandal rather than investigate it from day one. The have some nerve telling athletes how they should conduct themselves when they don't seem to care about their own duties.
The IOC chairman is a hater. I watched that race last night, and Usain did nothing beyond running the hell out of that race. He had every right to be cocky, and he did congratulate his competition, so this dude needs to piss off.
I don't think cocky asses are okay. In general, I find their behavior to be unsportsmanlike and off-putting. This guy's behavior isn't exactly model and it definitely isn't appealing, but it isn't the worst of the worse either. That said, I agree that the IOC has better things to be worried about.
i think IOC resents the fact that a young black man won a gold and didn't like how he was proud with his accomplisments. IOC and NBC can shove it up their butt-holes
He's not cocky. He's just confident.
Lord pllllllllllllease let him be clean.
@ J yes he is clean. Ato Bolton should not talk about showboating
@J- I am thinking the same thing but he does not look like someone on the juice.
@Jerine- I can't recall Ato showboating. Now his former training partner Maurice Green, is another story.
And the British 400 meter sprinter was a major showboater in his semi final and little to nothing has been said about that.
