"The Wiley team never wrote to Harvard, never debated Harvard, never beat Harvard," a knowledgable source tells Page Six. "And no Harvard administrator would have ever referred to the university as an all-white college since it had long been integrated."
In another glaring error, the black team couldn't even have called themselves victors as they did in the movie because blacks were not truly considered part of college debating circles until after World War II.
Honestly, someone should just ban Denzel Washington from making movies. This is just unacceptable.
Ugh! This article pissed me off so much this morning.
Harvard wasn't all that integrated in the 1930s. And Denzel freely stated that they purposely chose Harvard because it is the "gold standard" so it is not a "blooper" or a "glaring error".
More importantly, Black people weren't considered apart of a lot of things or told they were "not" something all the time in that era.
I have read countless stories of Black valedictorians at prestigious majority white schools in the early 20th century who rightfully earned the title valedictorian - and yet the school denied them the right to BE the valedictorian and blatantly either did not acknowledge them as such or forced them to share the prize with the white second place finisher.
That is just one example, but it is not a "glaring error" nor is it "impossible" that the Wiley team would have called themselves victors - even if "white folks didn't say so".
Nichelle,
Girl you right on. All that is irrelevant. THe movie was actually really good and inspiring. Everyone should see it because it's simply a reminder of what things used to be like and how we should appriciate what we have now and work harder to make things better.
Page Six and their infamous sources and their glaring reporting!
Maybe they should have listened to all the interviews weeks ago or read it up later, it's not that anyone said this was a documentary.
I wonder what Denzel do or didn't do to cause that rant.
…and I agree with all you said, Nichelle.
Page 6, stop trying to confuse the people. The fact is the movie is a good one. Watch how they didn't try to take that Oscar nod away from Angelina Trifie for A Mighty Heart. What the heck was so mighty about that?

When I read that article in Page Ridiculous to laugh to myself.
The author of the piece on Page Six obviously had not been paying attention to all the interviews that Denzel did the previous week, when he clearly stated that Harvard was chosen for the prestige vs. the actual school.
In movie making and any creative venture, it's call CREATIVE LICENSE. The movie was INSPIRED by events of the past and the director and co. decided to embellish a bit. SO WHAT?!!!! If it makes for an interesting MOVIE, not documentary, that is what movie goers pay $11.50 for.
The article was obviously trying to diminish the movie and the efforts of Washington. Give me a break. It must have been a slow news day!!!!
Do not forget, it is just a movie. The intent is what is important, the thought. Sort of like GOOD TIMES versus THE COSBY SHOW. There are black people that identify with the general lifestyle of either show. But, like most media embellishment is needed to dumb it down for entertainment purposes.
