Spike Lee Tells It Like It Is About His Colleagues
Where Are All The Black Soldiers In World War II Films?

spikeclint.jpgClint Eastwood is one of the most respected directors in Hollywood, but that didn't stop Spike Lee from voicing some very public criticism (and very valid) of his casting choices for Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.

"He did two films about Iwo Jima back to back and there was not one black soldier in both of those films," Lee said Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was a judge in an online short-film competition. "Many veterans, African-Americans, who survived that war are upset at Clint Eastwood. In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version."

Except to see the black soldier experience in Lee's new WWII film, The Miracle at St. Anna. Eastwood had no comment.

Lee also had some choice words for the Coen Brothers, who won the Best Directing Oscar this year for No Country For Old Men. "I always treat life and death with respect, but most people don't," he said. "Look, I love the Coen brothers; we all studied at NYU. But they treat life like a joke. Ha ha ha. A joke. It's like, 'Look how they killed that guy! Look how blood squirts out the side of his head!' I see things different than that."

He might be creating enemies every time he opens his mouth at Cannes this week, but since when does Spike Lee care?

Now if he could summon an ounce of respect for women, he'd be good to go.

i applaud his championing more depictions of black soldiers in film, but his Coen brothers assessment seems misplaced here.

and what is life if not a huge, terrible, awe-ful joke?

@souldecirce - i agree. i'm with spike on eastwood, but i don't get the coen brothers dig. it seems a bit pointless.

I think both the digs come from the same place-straight up jealousy. The Coen Brothers were his classmates, Ang Lee was his assistant, and they both have much larger careers than him.
I really like Spike Lee, but Eastwood and the Coen Brothers are just *better* filmmakers than he is. That's why they get attention for their movies and he gets attention for criticizing them.

Every time Spike Lee speaks out I hold my breath. I know his thoughts are usually on point, but people like Charles use the fact that it's Spike Lee to brush aside his critique. This has nothing to do with jealousy, I really don't think it has that much to do with Clint Eastwood either. His WW2 movie is the most recent, and therefore would be the best example to use. Forget who made the comment, let's talk about whether it's true or not. Don't hate Spike Lee for having the courage to say things that we all think when we go to the movies.

What part of truth is not acceptable. Know your history…if they could eliminate all the true history, then they would, but their are people like Spike and myself who lay it out. One would think that white people originated in America is why they pretty are at the helm now, but that pilaged , robbed, and raped the original native American, and stole everything after that too(including our people) for illbegotten means. So the people who have to struggle to make films are not able to proport the actuality of history, and the other;s with the majority of money always tell a onesided pie in the sky side of history, and you would think the only people that fought in wars are caucasians. It's not always popular to call it like it is, but it takes one to know one…Get Em' Spike! ~olga~

Forgive my typos in prior entry.

I agree completely with Spike. Thank God he still has the stamina to continue to speak out. When I saw No Country, I knew it was well-made but it seemed to possess an eeery evil. Total indifference to human life. I don't mind a little death and destruction but I find it depressing that most of the oscar winners were very brutal and bloody and sad right up to the end.

I attended a Spike Lee symposium where he answered questions for over an hour after we watched all four hours of When the Levees Broke. I'd have to say, as much as I think he did a wonderful job showing the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Spike Lee can be an utterly obnoxious person. There were students asking him thoughtful questions and he'd give them a "you-are-so-dumb-why-did-you-ask-me-that" response, complete with a sneer.

I think his point here is well-taken; I just think surely he must know white people/Hollywood/The Game by *now*? Surely, Spike. Dag. You're not always sitting courtside at a Knicks game. You don't just yell out "You suck!" all the time. And it's not just presenting "The truth" and "The facts" when you're dealing with The System. Throw some finesse up in there. Spike lacks finesse in his self-expression and, in my estimation, that has been the greatest hindrance to him… and to us, by extension.

He's right about Clint, wrong about the Coen brothers. That being said, dude, Spike needs to make some good movies and stop running his mouth.
