Remembering

Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

Where were you on September 11, 2001? If you'd like, feel free to share more about that day seven years ago.

On September 11, 2008

My preferred method of visualizing how long ago something happened is to imagine how old children born directly after an event would be today. In the case of 9-11, those kids are probably in first or second grade.

I remember it like it was yesterday. And the New York Times today showed how hard it is to forget when you live in New York. A slide show on its web site shows photos of how images of the twin towers in the NYC skyline still creep up everywhere.

» GOP Uses Graphic 9-11 Footage In Video

From the Boston Globe: "One of the most enduring taboos in American politics, the airing of graphic images from the September 11 attacks in a partisan context, died today. It was nearly seven years old. The informal prohibition, which had been occasionally threatened by political ads in recent years, was pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 CST, when a video aired before delegates at the Republican National Convention included slow-motion footage of a plane striking the World Trade Center, the towers' subsequent collapse, and smoke emerging from the Pentagon." Here's the video, if you care to see it..

maryalicia.jpgChristmas is over, which means everyone's back at work, depressed about their holiday weight gain, and broke from presents and travel. It also means that Oprah-endorsed Josh Groban and his Noel album no longer have a place at the tippy top of the Billboard 200.

In her second week on the charts, Mary J. Blige takes her rightful spot at No. 1, and Alicia Keys holds strong at No. 2. Chris Brown also crept up the charts from 10th to 5th place. It's nice to see that this isn't negatively affecting his sales. [BB]

Six years ago today I woke up in my extra-long twin dorm bed — late, as usual — and turned on the television while I debated whether or not to go to my first class. It was African American Political Thought — cool concept, but I hated the professor. It was a struggle making myself go every Tuesday and Thursday. It turned out I didn't need to make a decision on that particular day, which I spent the majority of on the floor, trying to get my stupid cell phone to make one successful phone call to somebody —- to my sisters, my mom, my aunts, my uncles — who could tell me that my father, who worked in the Pentagon, was okay.

He was, of course. It took so long for him to contact us because he and the rest of the medical personnel at the Pentagon were immediately dispatched to the scene to help with recovery. He later received a medal of commendation from the Army for doing things that he has never wanted to speak about. I don't blame him.
