» Racism Now Illegal in China

"After more than a decade of debate, a controversial anti-racism bill has been unanimously approved by legislators in Hong Kong. This could be good news for non-Chinese Hong Kongers like the Arcilla family. Originally from the Philippines, the Arcillas have called Hong Kong home for more than two decades. … Yet they face racism on a daily basis. Father Ray Arcilla, 54, said he has been called 'stupid' and 'brainless' in the course of his work as an engineer, simply because of the colour of his skin. … Ethnic minority groups, who make up five per cent of Hong Kong's seven million population, have long complained of discrimination from the majority-Chinese population, especially towards the darker-skinned South Asians."

Surprise, minorities: Hollywood doesn't like casting us as leads in films, even if that means completely shifting around facts to accommodate white actors.

Although director Spike Lee just dressed down the wizened Clint Eastwood for not including black extras in his WWII dramas, a new ABC News article takes issue with the way Hollywood consistently uses whites to fill major roles written for blacks, Hispanics and Asians. To wit:

In the new movie "Stuck," which opened last week, actress Mena Suvari plays a young woman named Brandi, who, after a night of partying, strikes a homeless man with her car, sending him through her windshield, and leaves him to die.

The plot is based on the real-life story of Texas woman Chante Mallard…

Mallard is African-American. Suvari, the blonde, blue-eyed beauty from "American Beauty" and the "American Pie" movies, is not. But she does wear cornrows to play the role of Brandi.

Also recently manipulated to remove minorities was 21, the story of an MIT "whiz kid" who went to Vegas and made a killing counting cards. In reality, the student is Asian American, but a white Englishman was cast to play him.

To get an explanation about why minority actors and actresses are being neglected in favor of whites, do what you do every time you have a question about this really demented world: follow the money:

WEIRD MORALS "For public schools in the No Child Left Behind era, it has become routine to analyze test scores and other academic indicators by race and ethnicity. But the Fairfax County School Board … has discovered the pitfalls of applying the same analytical techniques to measures of student behavior, especially when the findings imply disparities in behavior among racial, ethnic and other groups. The county School Board, which oversees one of the country's largest and most diverse suburban school systems, is scheduled to vote tonight on whether to accept a staff report that concludes, in part, that black and Hispanic students and special education students received lower marks than white and Asian American students for demonstration of 'sound moral character and ethical judgment.'"

Surprise! Minorities in the US are more likely than whites to rate their health care as poor. This opinion is most prevalent amongst blacks born in Africa, Vietnamese Americans, Chinese Americans and, though they weren't included in the study, thousands from America's shivering homeless minority.

Researchers at Harvard surveyed more than 4,000 adults and asked them questions like how quickly they were able to get an appointment when sick and whether their doctor explained things in a way the patient could understand.

91 percent of whites rated their care as excellent or good compared to 72 percent of Vietnamese Americans and 73 percent of blacks born in Africa. About three-quarters of whites also reported that their doctor listened carefully to them. That percentage dropped to 58 percent for patients from Central or South America.

According to experts, these study results are pretty much par for the course.

To be fair, many whites think our country's health care is shit, too. But, as you may recall, the inequality of America's health care system has been problematic for years, and it's one of the reasons our fucking unbelievably rich nation came in just behind Costa Rica in the WHO's rankings of the world's health systems.

A new poll of Hispanics, Asians, and Blacks across the country uncovered facts that most Hispanics, Asians, and Blacks were pretty much aware of already. When it comes to race, the nation's three "chief" minorities are not on the same page.

About three-quarters of Hispanics and about two-thirds of Asians believe they will progress in this country if they work hard, the survey found. But only 44 percent of African-Americans polled said they believed that hard work would bring them success, and 66 percent of African-Americans said they did not believe that everyone in the United States had an equal opportunity to succeed.

The sample of respondents reflected the demographic makeup of the three groups in the United States population, Mr. Bendixen said. About half of Hispanics and about four-fifths of Asians in this country are immigrants, while 90 percent of blacks were born here. The survey did not ask about the legal status of the immigrants.

It reported that 93 percent of Hispanics, 92 percent of African-Americans and 73 percent of Asians said racial tension was a very important problem in the United States.

In a touching display of optimism, the NYT tried to convince readers that these stats aren't all bad. Like, even though 50 percent of black think that Hispanics are stealing jobs and political power from them, a little less than 50 percent think this isn't true! And although half of Hispanics think blacks are scary criminals, the other half thinks nothing of the sort! Thank goodness for that.

Is The "Majority" Going To Flee?

Now that racial and ethnic minorities take up a third of the country's population, does the word "minority" really apply anymore? I guess we've got to wait until we reach 51 percent for a change that big. At this rate, that change will definitely come. The stats are after the jump.
