» Beyonce The Risk Taker

Beyonce, whose new album is expected to hit stores next month, has written a letter to fans about it that almost seems like a warning — as if she wants everyone to know that it probably won't be what they expect. "I have recorded over 70 songs and have created a sound that reveals all of me. I am in a different place right now, and I wanted people to see the many sides of me," Beyonce wrote. "The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side, and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid. … There is no label or tag on my sound. It's me, and I am so excited to share it with the world."

Perhaps Beyonce should give her wigs to the U.S. Government to help with our current financial crisis. Rumor has it the superstar owns $1 million in wigs, which are "custom-made from real hair." Her "friend" told In Touch that her wigs are "part of the reason she looks so gorgeous," although I think many people, myself included, would argue that she looks better without the 500-lb lace fronts. The same friend says that the wigs don't go to waste — Bey donates castoffs to a charity for cancer sufferers. [Sun]

Last weekend I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Bill T. Jones' play, Fela!, about Nigerian music legend and activist Fela Kuti. While waiting to enter the theater, I briefly chatted with someone who told me that he was part of Beyonce's crew and that she would be attending the show. If you know me, you know my interest was more than piqued, but, to my great disappointment, I never actually saw her. Fast forward to today, and the New York Post is reporting that Jay-Z and Beyonce are now obsessed with the off-Broadway production, and Jay wants to do all he can to help make it a success on Broadway. So.. I guess she was there, and she and the hubby liked it as much as I did. It deserves the A-list attention.

» 50 Cent: Beyonce Made Jay-Z Famous

From Contact Music: "50 Cent has taken a sly swipe at rap rival Jay-Z, insisting the '99 Problems' hitmaker was a 'no one' until he wed Beyonce Knowles. Superstar Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, wed the Bootylicious beauty in April, and 50 Cent claims it was their union - not the rap mogul's music - that raised his profile on the international scene. He says, 'I'm a big fan of Jay-Z, but outside of the states and hip-hop circles, no one really knew who he was until he married Beyonce.' The 'In Da Club' rapper has also disputed reports that Jay-Z is worth an estimated $1 billion, but is adamant he's not jealous of his fortune. He adds, 'I don't believe he's worth that much! It's all been exaggerated. I'm comfortable. I don't want for anything so I'm not in a race.'"

The tireless list-makers at Forbes have just come out with a new one — "Best-Paid Music Stars" — to make us feel even more poor than we already do in these trying economic times. The mag ranked hip hop stars separately, probably so that 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Diddy, all of whom would have made this list, don't get all the shine again

» Beware of Beyonce

"An online search for Beyonce or Brad Pitt could end up infecting and destroying your hard drive, thanks to computer hackers who use their names to plant viruses into computers. According to new data from computer security company McAfee, fans who go looking for info or photos on these stars have an 18 percent chance of having their computers infected with a virus or harmful hacking programs." Beyonce and Jay-Z, along with some other usual suspects (seriously, how is Joy Bryant everywhere at once?), attended the New Yorkers For Children Fall Gala last night. Apparently, Jay-Z judged it to be one of those sunglasses-are-appropriate-indoors events.

It's Hard To Take On Madonna

Rihanna performed a cover of Madonna's "Vogue" at Fashion Rocks, which aired last night. Yay or nay? I'm aware that Rihanna's success mystifies some of you…

After the jump, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake cover "Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing," and Beyonce salutes Etta James.

Beyonce: 1998 to Present

Beyonce turned 27 last week and has just announced a November release date for her third solo album. It's time to take a look back at Beyonce's journey from a 17-year-old lead singer in atrocities designed by her mama to an international pop star.

So Long Solange

Poor Solange Knowles will get just three months to make her solo mark before Beyonce butts in and takes over with her new album, which hits stores November 18th. By October 7th, we'll be hearing two singles, "If I Were A Boy" (hmm, Ciara might not like that one) and "Single Ladies," a group to which she has not belonged in a long time. Justin Timberlake is reportedly involved in some way, too.

Her label says the album represents "her most personal, reflective and revelatory collection to-date." [Billboard]

Star-Studded

At the annual Conde Nast Fashion Rocks concert Friday, an impressive number of current female pop stars took to the stage to perform the new benefit song, "Just Stand Up." The performance, featuring Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Keyshia Cole, Ashanti and Ciara, aired live on the Stand Up To Cancer telethon. If you watch the video, you'll see that young Miley is clearly the vocal weak link, but she makes up for it in enthusiasm. Based on the photos, Beyonce was sporting that wig for an Etta James tribute. I think… I hope.

» Beyonce Wants To Make Room For Solange

From Marie Claire UK: "[Beyonce]’s been quoted in the past as saying there’s a time limit on being a pop star. ‘Being a pop star, yes,’ she responds. ‘Being a legend, an icon, absolutely not. And, at this point, that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m over being a pop star. I don’t wanna be a hot girl. I wanna be iconic. And I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot. I feel like I’m highly respected, which is more important than any award or any amount of records. And I feel like there comes a point when being a pop star is not enough.’"

Do We Really Still Believe Light Skin Is Better Than Dark Skin?

Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

Inspired by the Beyonce ad, of course: It's not a stretch to say that lighter-skinned black women have more of a presence in the mainstream media, but within the black community, how much of an issue is skin color? Does colorism still plague us? How far do you think we have we come?
