» Congress Wants Bush To Pardon Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson, the barrier-busting black boxer who became the world heavyweight champion in 1908, might be catching a posthumous break from Congress. Lawmakers are urging the president to pardon Johnson, who spent a year in Leavenworth for transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes (read: messing with white women). "He was a victim of the times and we need to set the record straight — clear his name — and recognize him for his groundbreaking contribution to the sport of boxing," said Rep Peter King, R-N.Y., author of the resolution. John McCain authored a companion resolution for the Senate. [CNN]

» U.S. Team Suffers A Loss

Bantamweight boxer Gary Russell, Jr., has been removed from the U.S. team's list of competitors after collapsing of dehydration while struggling to make weight. The coach says he wasn't intaking as much fluid as they would have liked, although he doesn't add that he probably really wanted the kid to make weight, too. "Medically, he's been cleared, he's now resting," his coach said. "He's extremely depressed." [Reuters]

» Mayweather Thinks the Boxing Community Might Be a Little Racist

"[Floyd] Mayweather, a 31-year-old former Olympic bronze medalist from Grand Rapids, told The Grand Rapids Press in an interview Friday that [HBO] 'is great,' but criticized its boxing announcers. 'They talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he’s the second coming. Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I’m a black fighter,' Mayweather said. 'Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise.' HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said in a statement that the network, which has carried many of Mayweather’s fights, was disappointed to hear of the boxer’s remarks and denied his claims."

miketyson.jpgMike Tyson might have contributed 30 hours worth of interviews for a documentary on his life that will premiere in Cannes this week, and he might be flying all the way to France to attend the opening, but he's not happy about it. Not at all.

"I look at it now and I'm embarrassed I did it," Tyson told the New York Times. "There's a lot of information people didn't need to know… I don't know who I am. That might sound stupid. I really have no idea. All my life I have been drinking and drugging and partying and all of a sudden this comes to a stop. I never thought I would live to this age."

Tyson, who has dedicated himself to a life of clean living, will now presumably have the clarity to figure out who exactly he is, at the age of 42. There's always a ready punchline when writing about Mike Tyson, but knowing what I know about his life, it's all just pretty sad.

Hate Is Hate

calzaghe

Before losing his world light heavyweight title to Welshman Joe Calzaghe on Saturday night, Bernard Hopkins had assured his fans, "I would never let a white boy beat me. Never." The bold — and what I consider to be ugly — statement raises a question about which editor Lauren Williams and I had a lengthy discussion last week: What if a white person had said something like that?

Let me be clear, I in no way believe the world's whites have, as a whole, suffered in the way the world's blacks have, and, for some reason not easily put into words, I think this grants blacks some leeway as far as what is socially acceptable language. (For instance, "cracker" will never be hurtful in the way "nigger" is.) But, as the saying goes, just because you can doesn't mean you should, and bigotry comes from the same place within everyone, regardless of the sensitivity of the targets. Had Calzaghe stood at a press conference and announced, "I'll never lose to a black boy," the fight very well might have been canceled because of the public outcry for Calzaghe's head. Why wasn't there a similar reaction when Hopkins publicly equated white with weakness (a declaration ultimately proved to be untrue)?

Words are powerful, and it's a shame historical circumstances have rendered some slurs more acidic than others, but that doesn't mean anyone — no matter their background — should go around flippantly mocking people because of the color of their skin. In fact, very often, it's best to shut up and let your actions speak for you. That's a lesson Bernard Hopkins could stand to learn from that world champion "white boy."

Evander Holyfield proves once and for all that what boxers lack in brain power they make up for in, I don't know, grills? Can't he come up with his own business venture?

Holyfield, of Atlanta, is preparing to unveil the "Evander Holyfield Real Deal Grill," a direct competitor to Foreman's famous "Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine," which has reportedly earned $100 million in sales since 1995.

"I've got a George Foreman grill. It's a good grill," Holyfield, 44, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But don't you think the latest grill is supposed to be the best grill?"

At least being copycat grill-seller is better than getting pulled over by the cops with coke in your jeans pocket.

sharmba_garyshaw.jpg

White boxing promoter Gary Shaw showed what he really thinks of his bevy of black fighters when he called his own client, Anthony Hanshaw, a primate. How supportive.

A reporter for Black PR Wire says he received a call from Justus, who said, "You're not going to believe what Gary Shaw just told me." There were a lot of things said by him [Shaw] but one of the biggest things said by him, which I thought was a racial slur, was that he would put me and my ‘Black freaking monkey’ out of business and that he runs the show and Tony [Hanshaw] belongs to him," Justus said.

Boxing has quite enough shaky race and class issues without blatant racist slurs from the men making millions every time fighters get beat up in the ring. If the boxers associated with him know what's good for them, they'd take their business elsewhere. Then again, isn't being a boxer all about ignoring what's good for you?
