» Few Black Mastectomy Patients Opt for Reconstruction

• "Black women are 47% less likely than other women to undergo breast reconstruction after having a mastectomy, according to a study published in the November issue of Archives of Surgery, HealthDay/U.S. News & World Report reports. Undergoing breast reconstruction surgery immediately after having a mastectomy has several advantages, including aesthetic, psychosocial well-being and cost-effectiveness, according to the Johns Hopkins University researchers who conducted the study. … People have noticed that African-Americans have fewer referrals to plastic surgeons, and if they do have a referral, they have a lower rate of going to those referrals. Strangely, even once they see the plastic surgeon, reconstruction seems to be offered with less frequency."

Day Two

I'm all for service journalism, and black women need all the breast cancer information possible, considering the disparity in fatality rates. I'm also all for the concept of this NBC Nightly News series, in the sense that I thought it was going to give black women some due for the accomplishments we have made through the years and also bring some new, meaty information to the table. Instead, it's sort of doom and gloom — Monday we got a report on why black men aren't reaching the same professional level as black women, and yesterday we got the scary breast cancer report. It's not that I'm accusing NBC of providing false information, all of it is true. But it's all very elementary and not very helpful or in-depth. There are three more segments, and here's hoping things get a little more informative and a little less like the producers just searched the internet for "black women and education" and "black women and breast cancer" and reported whatever information the first couple of hits produced.

After the jump, check the web extra for some health tips.

Contrary to the rumors that have been furiously circulating the Internet and reported in the ever-reliable National Enquirer, Toni Braxton does not have breast cancer.

“There has been a rumor circulating that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. After feeling something uncomfortable in my left breast, I went in for a screening. I was very fortunate that they did not find anything and I am in great health. However, I encourage women to take their annual tests and suggested precautions to prevent this disease that continues to affect so many women.”

Robin Roberts, the excessively perky host on Good Morning America, announced on the air today that she had breast cancer and would be undergoing treatment over the next few months. Her announcement is accompanied on the ABC Web site by a scary first person account of her diagnosis.

At first I thought, "This can't be. I am a young, healthy woman." Nevertheless, I faced my fear head on and made an appointment to see the doctor. Much as I was hoping the doctor would say it was nothing, she did a biopsy and confirmed that the lump I'd found was indeed an early form of breast cancer.

Hearing the doctor say those words out loud was surreal.

I will be having surgery shortly and follow-up treatment in the months to come. So in the coming months, you will probably notice that I will have my good days and my bad days, but I know I will get through it with the love and support of my family and friends.

If you want, you can send her a personal message here. And then — I'm clearly just talking to the ladies — do a self-breast exam!

  • Overweight children as young as three years old, based on bullying, teasing and stimatization, have a quality of life comparable to people with cancer. Knowing that one day they can compete to be Mo'Nique's Miss F.A.T. 2020 helps them through it.
