Across the country little kiddies hoping to listen to some hot Hannah Montana tracks on Christmas morning got a vocabulary lesson — in the form of the Diplomats' Diplomatic Immunity Disc 2 — instead. Yes, despite the very Disney packaging on both the case and the disk, some children found themselves listening to the lyrical stylings of Cam'Ron and Jim Jones instead of the tween singing sensation. I guess this is one way to get people to buy their albums… CONTINUED »
A little girl with a "Don't Snitch" shirt on says, "I didn't see nuttin!" to a man, also wearing a "Don't Snitch" shirt, standing over a corpse with a smoking gun in his hand. "That's a good little ho," he responds. Behind them looms a billboard emblazoned with the words, "Rap Your Life Away."
This is the political cartoon that got Florida Times Union cartoonist Ed Gamble in trouble. His editor has said that maybe he shouldn't have allowed the use the word "ho," but Gamble maintains he used it to show that rap is demeaning to women.
The cartoon in general was inspired by the now notorious 60 Minutes segment starring Cam'ron, who advocated not snitching even when there's a serial killer living next door. Ignorance inspires ignorance. Thanks, Cam.
I'm shocked no one is searching "Iraq War Fatalities" Or Something
• Beyonce's fall is the most searched thing on the web, proving that next time she should try reverse psychology and ask the audience to put her pratfalls on YouTube. [EUR]
• I will never defend Cam'ron's stupid "stop snitchin'" comments, but I don't think 50 Cent is really qualified to criticize him for saying something inappropriate. [SP]
• The house that "Flavor of Love" built needs to be burned. [Bossip]
• Is Angela Simmons not so angelic after all? [RWS]
• When you're a white Republican politician embroiled in a salacious gay sex scandal, go ahead and use the "Lindsay Lohan." It won't work, but in your constituents probably think being a racist is probably a lot more acceptable than being gay. [NS]
We're Paying Higher Interest For Our Gaudy Luxury Car With 22-Inch Rims. No Fair!
Blacks are charged higher auto loan rates. This sucks even more when you consider the fact that we're usually buying cars — and accessories — that we can't afford in the first place. [KCS]
Black ballet dancers aren't rising in the ranks of any dance company except Alvin Ailey's. One of the ingenious and ridiculous reasons offered for this problem (which is easily a result of equal parts class/access issues and discrimination) is that black women are more "earthy." [IHT]
According to the Village Voice, Jim Jones is to Cam'ron as Chingy is to Ludacris. Ouch. [VV]
American Girl dolls are great because they come in most colors (Asian is conspicuously absent), but why does the one black one have to have the back story of a runaway slave? [RGJ]
Blacks and whites are split over wanting Barry Bonds to break Hank Aaron's homerun record. Ah, the racial turmoil I avoid by ignoring sports. [BET]
If Cam'ron made a mistake, what does that mean for everyone who defended him? Apparently, Cam now realizes that he erred in venting his personal frustrations to a viewing public that included people who may have been victims of serious crimes or are still recovering from a mass shooting that devastated the nation. Or something like that. I bet he pouted like a child in a while his manager drafted the brief, just-released apology. I feel a little bad for him, being forced to violate his not-so-ironclad code of ethics, and all.
M-1 from Dead Prez must have turned on the radio, listened to some Dipset, and decided Cam'ron was worth defending on Fox News after Sunday's 60 Minutes "Stop Snitchin'" debacle. M-1, he's not. The snitching argument, as presented in its most extreme form on 60 minutes, is one that makes little sense in general but even less sense to middle-aged white TV hosts. I think everyone, except for the people who can effect change, should just stop talking about it. Plus, it's old news.
To make matters worse, news producers can't, or prefer not to, find someone who can articulately explain the dysfunctional relationship between the black community and the police. It's unfortunate, because I expected a better showing from a guy who brings us songs like Be Healthy.
Amerie insured her legs for $2 million. How does that number compare to her net worth, I wonder? I'd be suspicious of any freak leg accidents that befall her in the coming weeks. [Starpulse]
Snitching on serial killers is bad, but snitching when you get beat up is no biggie. Ask Cam, who's the expert on such things. [Bossip]
Along the same lines, watch the above clip from last night's embarrassing 60 Minutes segment about the black community's "relationship with the police", if only to hear Anderson Cooper utter the words "stop snitchin'." [H&P]
NYC's Hot97 has joined a handful of other black radio stations in cutting out derogatory hip hop. I dont' know what this means for urban radio, but I'm sure Gospel rappers are praising Jesus and Don Imus for their big break. [SOHH]
Vanessa Williams bares her "soul," 1984-style, in Allure. [CL]
There's a columnist named Randy Cohen who has made a career out of solving ethical dilemmas in his NY Times column, The Ethicist, and on NPR. I've recently discovered that, as a country, we've been paying attention to the wrong ethicist. Might I introduce you to Dr. Cam'ron Giles? Let's ask him a few questions. CONTINUED »
