That well-publicized jailhouse wedding between Remy Ma, who was just sentenced today to 8 years in prison for shooting her friend in the stomach, and Brooklyn rapper Papoose? Yeah, it's not actually going to happen. Not for lack of trying, though.

When Papoose arrived at the jail yesterday — their wedding day — police found a key that "easily opened" the type of handcuffs used at the jail in Papoose's possession. He's banned from Rikers for six months. In two days, Remy Ma lost a fiance, a handcuff key (and possible escape strategy), and eight years of her freedom. Sucks.

Ever the loyal boyfriend, Papoose showed up at today's sentencing hearing and got in a tussle with court officers. “Fuck jail,” he yelled as his friends pulled him away. “Fuck jail, lock me up. I don’t care, y’all just want money. She didn’t’ do nothing.”

"Hey fellow Americans, don't look at the New York Times or the Washington Post or turn on the news or check out my approval ratings. Don't think about the war or natural disasters. Just look at these nice, happy wedding pictures!"

So far, we've been going off of a lot of hearsay on this Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey marriage. But now the ever-diligent People has an actual wedding photo its latest cover, with an extra little swimsuit-clad beach picture in the bottom corner. Mariah in a veil and Nick in a cheesy smile? This is real, folks. Oh, and there are also quotes:

As residents of the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas become more aware that the celebrity wedding that occurred in their hometown could prove to be lucrative, more and more secrets are coming out about Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey's random ass wedding Wednesday. A source confirms that Carey did file for a Bahamian wedding license, another source said she provided flowers, which were requested on the same day as the ceremony, and a Cannon family member said she heard news of the wedding from the lucky groom's mouth. But here's a troubling sign: a representative from the island's registrars office said that there had been no license filed under Carey or Cannon's name. [MTV]

Forget the engagement rumors — a source "close to Nick Cannon" tells Latina magazine that Cannon and Mariah Carey got married yesterday in a private ceremony on a small island. The wedding was "very impulsive," says the source. There were a few close friends in attendance, including Da Brat. Uh, congrats?

As celebrities go, Alicia Keys is seen as pretty squeaky clean, even when she is being dogged by lesbian rumors and painted as a crazy conspiracy theorist. Nevertheless, she's been in the business of dispelling myths lately, from her recent television and radio tour explaining her odd "gangsta rap" theories to a wedding with her long-time collaborator and boyfriend-she-doesn't-talk-about, Kerry "Krucial" Brothers. Rumor has it the couple booked the Oheka Castle in Long Island for Fourth of July weekend for a wedding. [SP]

We broached this timely subject in an open thread last Friday: Is it a gift or a curse that tabloids and paparazzi show such little interest in black celebrities? The jury is still out on that one, but this week's coverage of the Jay-Z/Beyonce nuptials proves that, for a variety of reasons, editors just aren't that interested in black celebs.

Jay-Z and Beyonce are huge international stars, yet Us Weekly was the only celebrity mag to make it their main cover story. To be fair, I can point to the extremely private nature of their wedding, that they haven't sold any photos, and that the couple hasn't even admitted they're married as reasons why magazines editors might have shied away from making it a main story. But that's not really the reason. They say so themselves.
