Are Genes All Good?

Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

Scientists now know more than ever about DNA. Recently, they've discovered the small shifts in the human genome that account for the pale skin of Europeans, the tendency of Asians to sweat less and West Africans’ resistance to certain diseases.

It's all very interesting, but, to some, also very worrisome. Because noticeable differences in DNA brings about the idea that race is more than skin deep.

How do you feel about genetic research that might prove you "inferior" in some way?

» DNA Exonerations Bring Unreliable Witnesses To Light

Dallas County leads the way in DNA exonerations. The large number of falsely convicted prisoners there begs the question — how did this happen? The Dallas Morning News just finished an 8-month investigation: "Victims pressured to pick suspects, the use of suggestive lineup procedures and evidence withheld to preserve shaky identifications are former practices discovered… In all but one of the 19 convictions resulting in DNA exonerations, the newspaper reported, police and prosecutors built their case on eyewitness accounts, even though they knew such testimony can be fatally flawed." It's no secret that a small amount of knowledge can be poisonous to a person who lacks context and understanding. As more and more scientists uncover tiny variations in DNA that cause certain racial or ethnic traits — such as pale skin in Europeans, West Africans' resistance to certain diseases, and even Asians' tendency to sweat less — many in the scientific community worry that people who are already prejudiced will use these findings as false scientific proof that certain races are superior to others. It's already happening, according to a story in the New York Times.

    solarsystem.jpg

  • Scientists discovered last week that a planet 20 light years away from Earth has characteristics that make it able to sustain life. As a test, we should send all the characters from VH1 Celebreality shows and see if they come back.
  • Actually, maybe we should all move to the new planet, considering the luck we have here on Earth. Inequalities in health care and socio-economic factors continue to make colon cancer deadlier for blacks.
  • Meanwhile, scientists uncovered DNA variations that are tied to prostate cancer. Wonder of wonders — these variations are most common in black men.
  • And yet, there's always a little bit of good news: Cervical cancer rates are decreasing. Bad news: The rates are still higher in Black and Hispanic women.
