Scarred for life

winehouse.jpg• Amy Winehouse doesn't actually have emphysema, she just has scarring in her lungs that could lead to emphysema. That's why it was okay for her to smoke a cigarette upon exiting the hospital. [MG]

• Jill Scott's engaged! To a drummer named Lil John Roberts! Thank goodness its not a different Lil Jon. [BV]

• Does this look and sound like a straight-to-DVD production or what? [NB]

• Rick Ross and Foxy Brown plan to reveal their engagement at the BET Awards. Made for each other, those two are. [NR]

AUNT STEINEM? David Paterson, New York's newly appointed blind, black Governor, recently recounted to The New York Times an incident in which he became "furious" with a colleague when she told him she had encountered more bias in her life for being a woman than for being black: "'Internally, I probably felt myself more discriminated against as a disabled person,' Mr. Paterson said in 2006. 'And when I would experience discrimination from another African-American I would go ballistic. I thought black people were supposed to understand.'"

DO RIGHT WOMAN "California lawmakers elected Democrat Karen Bass as the next Assembly speaker on Thursday, making her the first black woman to hold the powerful position…Bass was elected to the 80-member chamber in 2004 and is known for writing legislation on child welfare and social justice issues."

I bet you didn't know that the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" is actually a feminist anthem. Will.i.am recently came clean and admitted that the song was written for all of those really smart women out there hidden behind double Ds and small waists. And to think we never would have known.

I always wondered what it must be like to be a girl, always gettin’ pulled on. Maybe she’s the smartest genius on the planet, but she’s rackin’ double Ds with a 26-inch waist and a big ol’ ass and no one’s ever gonna see her like that because that’s the way the world is.

Remind me never to take advice from Will.i.am on how to accurately execute an artistic vision.

• Oh, virginity vows. They're so easy to maintain until you start dating Justin Timberlake. And then it's all downhill from there.[SP]

• Chris Brown, next time just say, "No comment." You'll sound more mysterious and less inarticulate. [Bossip]

• Is a non-feminist the same as a racist? And should we be taking feminism (or racism) lessons from a Playboy executive? [Racialicious]

• Totally off topic, but it got me through the day. [SH]

Thinner, More Militant Times For Queen Latifah

I think a re-release of this song with the remixed lyrics, "Who you callin' a nappy-headed ho," would be a great theme song for the Rutger's Women's Basketball team.

This 1993 Queen Latifah song is ever so relevant to the current hip hop debate but would be a highly unlikely hit if it were released today. Plus, with the current crop of female rappers, who would perform it? Remy Ma? I think not.
