» Legal!

Gay marriage is now legal in Connecticut. The state supreme court ruled 4-3 today that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The majority opinion: "We conclude that, in light of the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of marriage carries it it a status and significance that the newly crated classification of civil unions does not embody, the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm. We also conclude that our state scheme discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, for the same reasons that classifications predicated on gender are considered quasi-suspect for the purposes of the equal protection provisions of the United States constitutions…" You do not have to be a Connecticut resident to get married there. Not all black people are voting for Obama.

A group of protesters calling themselves "Blacks Against Obama" interrupted Senator Obama's speech at a rally in Coral Gables, Florida today.

Because they were soon shouted down by the thousands of Obama supporters surrounding them, Blacks Against Obama's verbal messages were unclear, but a couple of signs they were holding seemed to take issue with the fact that Obama supports gay marriage. Of course, Obama doesn't support gay marriage, but why let truth spoil a nice bout of indignation. Some of the other signs were inscribed with "KKK."

Obama himself stayed calm, telling the protesters, "It's no problem for you to put your signs up, but let me finish what I have to say." The group continued screaming and were escorted out, at which point Obama said, "Alright guys, see ya."

Video after the jump.

Conventional wisdom says that blacks will turn out in droves in California — and in every other state — to support Barack Obama come November 4th. Conventional wisdom also says that blacks are a generally homophobic lot who will vote for the anti-gay marriage resolution that will be on the ballot in the Golden State. So we can conclude that on election day, blacks will greatly contribute to the end of gay marriage in California. Right?

Wrong, says Timothy Stewart-Winter in the LA Times. Sure, we all know that blacks will be voting in record numbers this election, he writes, but do we really know that blacks are more against gay marriage than anyone else?

isaiahwashingt.jpgIsaiah Washington, who was fired from Grey's Anatomy for either calling co-star T.R. Knight a faggot or, as he tells it, announcing that he is not Patrick Dempsey's faggot, just made a big donation to Equality California, an organization fighting to stop an anti-marriage amendment in the state. He made the donation after his publicist married his partner and requested that donations be sent to the organization in lieu of gifts. Washington seems to be trying very hard to rebuild burned bridges in Hollywood and is probably slowly succeeding, but his upcoming guest spot on A&E's The Cleaner sort of pales in comparison to the role of Dr. Burke.

Gay Marriage: Here to stay?

gaynuptials.jpgWherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

Hundreds of couples have married in California since gay marriage became legal yesterday evening. Where do you see this going in California — will it soon be knocked down by the anti-gay-marriage folks or is California's Supreme Court ruling a sign of more of the same to come from other states? If so, how do you feel about it?

takeiandhusband.JPGGay Star Trek star George Takei is very close to boldly going where few men have gone before: into a loving marriage with another man.

With the California Supreme Court’s legalization of gay marriage taking effect yesterday, Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, talked with The Early Show about being in the final stages of wedding planning, a process Takei calls “delicious anguish.” Click through for the adorable video of the lovebirds.

davidpaterson.jpgNew York Governor David Paterson, who took over after Eliot Spitzer’s hooker scandal, vowed earlier this year to bring same-sex nuptials to the Empire State. While couples can’t yet marry within state lines, Paterson and his team this month declared that New York must accommodate gay marriages performed elsewhere, like California, which will likely start issuing same-sex marriage licenses June 17th.

gaymarriage.jpgThings are probably hectic in California right now, where the Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that Proposition 22, a ban on gay marriage, is unconstitutional. That’s the good news, of course. The bad news is that the court also ruled that San Francisco “acted unlawfully by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the absence a judicial determination that CA statutes limited marriage to union between a man and a woman are unconstitutional.” The 2004 marriages would thus be nullified, but who cares? Now they can have another wedding!
