» Legal!
Gay marriage is now legal in Connecticut. The state supreme court ruled 4-3 today that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The majority opinion: "We conclude that, in light of the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of marriage carries it it a status and significance that the newly crated classification of civil unions does not embody, the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm. We also conclude that our state scheme discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, for the same reasons that classifications predicated on gender are considered quasi-suspect for the purposes of the equal protection provisions of the United States constitutions…" You do not have to be a Connecticut resident to get married there. Not all black people are voting for Obama. A group of protesters calling themselves "Blacks Against Obama" interrupted Senator Obama's speech at a rally in Coral Gables, Florida today. Because they were soon shouted down by the thousands of Obama supporters surrounding them, Blacks Against Obama's verbal messages were unclear, but a couple of signs they were holding seemed to take issue with the fact that Obama supports gay marriage. Of course, Obama doesn't support gay marriage, but why let truth spoil a nice bout of indignation. Some of the other signs were inscribed with "KKK." Obama himself stayed calm, telling the protesters, "It's no problem for you to put your signs up, but let me finish what I have to say." The group continued screaming and were escorted out, at which point Obama said, "Alright guys, see ya." Video after the jump. |

Wrong, says Timothy Stewart-Winter in the LA Times. Sure, we all know that blacks will be voting in record numbers this election, he writes, but do we really know that blacks are more against gay marriage than anyone else? CONTINUED » |
